On Oct. 4, 2005, Autodesk announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Alias, a privately held developer of 3D graphics technology, for $182 million in cash. This acquisition will grow Autodesk’s expertise and offerings in the film and video, interactive games, media, Web, consumer products, industrial design, automotive, architecture and visualization markets. Autodesk anticipates that the transaction will close within the next four to six months.

Some Thoughts
For those that don't already know, Autodesk owns 3ds max and Alias owns Maya. 3ds max and Maya are the two major packages in game development. Granted there are a few others. But those two are the major players. This purchase will give Autodesk a huge lead in the market. Which could give them the ability to raise prices. It will also cause problems for people who only learned Maya. Oh well, I'm good. I only learned 3ds max. :cool:
