View Full Version : Games: Stuff I love Stuff I hate
The gaming industry is exploding and there are lots of different games for a lot of different platforms. We love the beautiful graphics the challenging AI and the innovative game design.. (I know)
But there are some things that just piss me off. So for the pilot show I thought it would be a good idea to get together a few lists for the industry.
Stuff I love and Stuff I hate.
These are the little things, the big things, the most important things that annoy and amuse us. It's not all rose scented farts in the gaming world.
Stuff I love
The feeling before starting a game I've never played before
Being surprised by something the game designer did that I wasn't expecting.
Realistic lighting
Healing a dying soldier in Battlefield 2
Parachuting out of a burning helicopter in Battlefield 2
Beating someone with a higher rank in Madden
Listening to the hilarious shit people say over xbox live when they are winning
Being at the top of any list when the round ends
Watching that katamari ball just keep getting bigger and bigger
Seeing the most unbelievable dancer in the world at an arcade...wearing the same shirt as his buddy on the dance pad next to him
Those cute little japanese character games
Installing a new 3D Card
Updating the drivers on that new 3D Card
Setting all the settings to MAX on a first person shooter that just came out
The week of E3
Finding the exact spot I am stuck on gamefaq's
Stuff I hate
Poorly designed game controls
Games that want me to sign up, install, or do anything that has NOTHING to do with playing the game I just paid for
Trying to deal with a gamepad playing first person shooters
Cheaters and glitchers in online games (bastards)
ridiculously boring or unessasary cut scenes that I CANNOT click through.
Forcing me to watch 5 company logos before the main menu loads
The fact that a digital game cannot be purchased cheaper online if I eliminate all of your physical distribution costs.
Misleading feature lists
Misleading preview game videos
Misleading Box Art
Misleading Screen Shots
SHIT THAT JUST DOESNT WORK LIKE YOU SAY IT SHOULD
The fact that my Xbox has a laser problem that gives gives me the black screen of death and results in losses in madden online
Rosters that don't get updated on a timely basis
LAG - LAG - LAG
Exclusive control of professional sports games
Ok you're turn I'm getting upset. Maybe I should do the stuff I hate first next time so I can finish on a positive.
Let's try and get a good list of all your love and hates and I will share with the world on the show.

I agree with a lot of yours, so I won't double post
Love:
The Smell of a new game
Opening a new console on launch day
Getting the last flag in DoD:Source, then killing the other team
Multiple kills witha grenade in FPS's
Saving games with an HDD
Huge lands to explore (Morrowind)
Hate:
Memory Cards
Patches that do more harm than good
Having to pre-order a game or console to get it when it comes out
Server downtime in MMO's
Annoying people using voice in online games
Team Killers
In FPS's when people running in front of you just stop

Things I love would be stuff like
Getting a new game I have been wanting to play.
Really long immersive games that let me do anything.
Multiple ways to complete an objective(Hitman and GTA come to mind)
Heh just about anything Nintendo
Anything that is just better then I was expecting it to be. Morrowind Game of the Year for one, even though it pissed me off to at times
Finally beating a level or boss that I couldn't before
Things I hate
Overhyped games. FUCK YOU Big Mouth for Fable, and cancelling B.C.
Games that are just to damn short when you pay 50 bucks for them
Impossible bosses that get 4 million hits in before you get one. Or just have insanely high health.
Impossible levels that have thousands of enemies firing at you and no way to hide or kill them.
People who claim to have beat impossible bosses or levels.
People bragging about how "popular" online gaming is when the vast majority(90%+) of the gaming world DOESN'T go online.

Things I love:
Great Storylines, cutscenes, voice acting. (Legacy of Kain Series, Metal Gear Series, God of War)
Great checkpoint systems that seem to know right where I am gonna die and I don't have to backtrack 10 minutes to get there again (God of War).
everything else I love has been covered in prior posts.
Online Cooperative Play (Splinter Cell Chaos Theory)
Things I Hate:
Snipers in pretty much any online game (aka skilless bastards that can't fight)
15 year old online gamers that speak like they just came out of the ghetto or prison.
EA Tiburon (artists/modelers)
Horrible checkpoint systems where I have to restart a level or a good chunk of it, restarting a level after a boss, bosses that have multiple parts but don't include a checkpoint between parts basically 15 minute endurance matches you have to do all the way over again....
Constantly respawning enemies with no end.
Games that NEED Online Cooperative like Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks and don't.

I like that ending on a positive note, so I'm ripping that shit off ;)...
HATE:
1) I hate the fact that a person like Jack Thompson, who knows so very little about games and gaming culture, yet excretes his nonsensical ramblings on the evils of the gaming companies and the idiocy of gamers (all the while collecting fat checks written on the back of the industry he so seemingly despises), can garner such a nationwide media platform from which he can spread his half-truths and flat-out lies.
2) I hate the fact that the ESRB is so desperate to maintain it's "media darling" image that it now acts like it has a case of the Jan Brady-middle child syndrome...and is doing it's best to placate it's bipolar mother (the generally gaming-ignorant public) and alcoholic father (self-serving politicians). So tell me again...just how the fuck do you plan on regulating user-created content? By fining the developers? Genius, I tell you...pure gen-i-us!
3) Finally, I have to say it: as stoked as I am to have a shiny new, next-gen console sitting in my livingroom this coming November...I hate the fact that Microsoft went with the two skus and is releasing a non-hdd equipped Xbox 360. Sure, initially it might not seem like that big of a deal. But ultimately, I think they really cost themselves a chance at greatness. Not just for themselves, but developers and gamers as well. The history of this industry and peripherals speaks for itself (and call it whatever you will, but if you don't have to buy it then in my possibly worthless opinion then it's a peripheral...no matter how you box it all up and tie it off with a shiny bow), and I don't think things will be any different this time around. Instead of an integral component of the system, we'll have a place to put our photos and custom soundtracks. Could it be worse? Absolutely. But damn, it could have been so much more.
LOVE:
1) And on a positive note for the 360, I LOVE all of those games that actually look like next-gen titles: Gears of War, Project Gotham Racing 3, Perfect Dark Zero (finally it looks like it should, thank you Rare!), Elder Scrolls IV, Call of Duty & at least a few others. No, graphics aren't everything. But if I'm going to shell out a little over half a grand for a console and a couple of games, it damn well better be purty on my fancy, schmancy new home theater set-up.
2) I love the o-so-delicious irony in the fact that Nintendo's tendency to sort of live in it's own world may well be what brings it a return to prominence in the home console sector. Sure, it's a long shot. But I admire the hell out of the company's strategy to take itself out of the running for console dominance, and continue looking for new and innovative ways to pull the public into games and gaming culture. It's really just par for the course for the guys at Nintendo, but this time, it really seems to make sense.
3) Shigeru Miyamoto's smile...and I mean that in a "I'm straight and dig hawt chicks and nekkid chicks with big guns and big racks and pizza and laser beams" sort of way. Not that I have to justify myself to you, you dick. :D Seriously, I've never had the honor of meeting this guy in person, but I can't imagine this guy not walking into a room and just lighting the entire place up. To me, he's like that newcaster who's been on television for 30 years...or your favorite beat-up-but-comfortable shirt or pair of slippers (so my analogies suck...eat me). As long as he's hanging around the industry, everything's gonna' be okay. It might also have to do with the fact that the guy designs games like nobody's business. ;)
