BEST
Battlefield 2: If you can play with good squad that uses voice communication it's the best online FPS out there. Nothing is more satisfying than being a pilot of co-pilot in a chopper using voice communication and giving your troops cover so they can capture a flag. Also the medal/badge/ribbon and stats add the MMO or RPG feel to the game. If your system can run it and you can tolerate patches that cripple the game for a couple days, buy this game.
Day of Defeat: Source
This is another great shooter that came out this year. The $20 price tag makes it hard to pass up. The graphics in DOD:S are drastic improvement over the original, just like the jump from HL1 to HL2. If your computer can support it, the HDR is a great graphical enhancement. Some people complain about the lack of pistols for some classes, but other than that, the game is similar to its HL1 counter part. The HL2 engine physics and graphics add a lot of realism to the experience.
F.E.A.R. (Demo)
I've only had the chance to play the demo of F.E.A.R., but the game was pretty impressive as a single player experience. Graphics were amazing, and the AI is incredible. I can't say much about the story, the demo doesn't go that much into it.
You know that one with the aliens killing your entire crew and you take out the leader. That was pretty cool.
either that or Battlefield 2

Best on Xbox: Ghost Recon 2 Summit Strike...More of a 3rd person shooter than first person. The thing that makes this one stand out, is the ability to play co-op missions on Xbox Live. Playing co-op missions over Live, with a group of friends makes for one of the absolute best multiplayer experiences available. Great value too since it's only $30 new.
Best on PC: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat. Not much to say. This one puts all the other multiplayer shooters on the PC to shame. Awesome game.

I've only really played PC first-person shooters this year but:
Best Multiplayer -
Battlefield 2 (w/ Special Forces expansion) - Even though this game was buggy at first release, and needs really high-specs to run it to it's best ability, This game is still amazing. Take everything you loved about Battlefield 1942, and multiply it by 1000. Battlefield 2 has great gameplay and really needs you to work as a team to win the round. Kits make you decide how you're going to accomplish helping your team win with which weaponry you're going to use.
Day of Defeat: Source - Although not many people play it now, it's an overlooked beautiful game. It's Valve's first game to show off HDR-lighting (which looks so damn sweet!), and it stays true to the original Day of Defeat's gameplay. The guns are accurately modeled, and are balanced really well. The map layouts are some of the best I've seen in any first-person shooter. This game is coming out with loads of custom maps and models which makes this a great game of this year.
Star Wars Battlefront II - Battlefront 1 + New Maps + Space Battles + Battlefield 2 = Win
Best Single-Player -
F.E.A.R. -
The story in this game is pretty sweet and the graphics are amazing. This is the only game that has made me jump out of my chair yelling "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?!" at my monitor.... Though this game may be average on the multiplayer, it's a must buy just to experience the story and scares of the game.
Honorable Mentions -
Mercenaries
Gun
Call of Duty 2
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect
Project Snowblind
Shitty FPS's -
Quake 4
Vietcong 2
Boiling Point: Road to Hell
Pariah
Lord Moon

Best:
BF2
HL2
Far Cry
F.E.A.R.
God of War (ok,ok, so its a First Person Swordsman)
EDIT: Any chance of getting David Jaffe from God of War on as a guest for either your show or Blackwolf's show? He's developing a PSP game. Might be interesting to hear his thought about developing for both platforms and their differences.

Deus Ex... err, 2005? ok...
Good/not great:
Battlefield 2: I haven't played this in a few months now, but I did have a lot of fun back then. One of the few games to promote teamplay and actually use it as a gameplay mechanic. I only started playing a few months after the game released, but there was still some annoying bugs, especially with networking/server browser.
Although I wasn't affected by this, but props to whoever designed the reward requirements when the game released. 1000 hours to get a stupid badge? Wow, must think highly of your game if you expect people to slave that much hours away. Then reality sets in, they lower the requirements for awards by a big amount, and now someone who just plays for 2 hours can get a rank that someone needed to play for 2 months before the patch. GG.
Quake 4: Okay, MP was meh (I'm not into the Quake 3 style mp), but I loved the single player campaign. Down to basics run n gun, a decent sci fi plot, and a gorgeous/horrific artstyle.
F.E.A.R. isn't on my list since I haven't played the full version.
Shit list:
Pariah: It's like Digital Extremes thought it would be funny if they developed the gameplay machanics and level design for this pile while they were shooting up crack, and not good crack like Konami had with Katamari. The major disappointment was the level design, and this is coming from the guys that made most of the levels for the Unreal franchise (excluding UC2). Very big let down being the first FPS DE has developed standalone.

I can't think of any good shooters that came out this year, mostly because the only games I bought this year was Coded Arms and DDR: Extreme 2.
The Worst:
Ratchet: Deadlocked - The reason why I hate this game so much is not because of the selection of weapons, not because of the multiplayer, but because it has strayed away from it's original Platforming roots to a Third Person Shooter. On top of that, the movement was slippery, the humor was more dry than ever, and the constant shooting everything for boring after an hour of gameplay.
Coded Arms - This was an attempt from Konami to make a FPS game for the PSP. It failed. Badly. The controls were great, but there was no precision when aiming. The auto-aim hardly helped at all. The levels and enimies just kept getting repetitive. Enimies just came out of no where and you had to keep shooting. Levels were randomly generated, but they were all square and horribly made. This is the worst FPS game I've ever played in my life.

Best Games:
F.E.A.R: Great single player game, Multiplayer had issues with lack of game modes.
Call of Duty 2: Added in some cool elements, but overall though they did not add a whole hell of alot of new things to the game
Project Snowblind:Crystal Dynamics first attempt at a FPS, and it's done very well.
The Bad:
Quake 4 - Sure, it may be one of the 8 games for linux, but the single player is just pisspoor, The Multiplayer is "okay" (I liked quake 3, so this is more of that) but they did not add enough to it, it just feels like quake 3... but with a new engine... and thats about it. Big letdown...
But it works for linux so with this game, UT2004, Quake 3, Doom 3, and a few other games, there are at least games for it :(

If your PC can handle BF2 at it's full settings, you will see the best looking shooter ever. I also loved Call of Duty 2, and how it threw you in to the environment, just like the first. The ambient sounds, the realism of the war-torn visuals all made you feel like you were there. It was great all around.
