View Full Version : Streaming distribution
I've been pricing out various places that distribute audio streams, but I thought I'd throw a note in here. If you have access to lots of bandwidth, or know someone that does, post it in here and I'll compare it to what I've found. It's probably going to be a 20k stream (not archived) for an average of 10 hours per week.

Well, if you are going with as Cheap as possible, then I would go with Shoutcast (http://www.shoutcast.com/)
Does not take up much bandwidth, easy to use, just need people to tune in, which you would have no trouble with (only my friends care about anything I put there)
But there are other ones for more "mass" amount of people. I'll search around for others

Well roadrunner has unlimited bandwith, but then it still would slow down my browsing/gaming/downloading, but if you would need any help from me, I could do some... maybe.

HA HA HA HA HA! I WISH!!!!!
NO isp has unlimited bandwidth, it can't happen. The bandwidth get's spread to everyone around you who has signed up for it.
EDIT: But if you want, you can get a server (http://www.rackspace.com/index.php?CMP=OTC-AS5304751640), then you can put a shoutcast program there, then have whoever you need to connect to that and broadcast.
But i bet there are other more professional programs out there, but when people can have 80,000+ on shoutcast, thats pretty good, and if it's only at 20kb, thats really low, so it won't take up "too" much bandwidth.

no, you don't understand, When you are downloading, you will see that your download is capped at a number, let's say 300 kb/s, it never really goes above it. thats because your bandwidth has been capped.

I was hosting some trailers on port 81, and I have downloaded stuff at 1,200 somehting kb/s before. I cant remember who it was here but they sent me a screen and they were goign at 5,000 kb/s.
Also now I have unlimited hosting so I just put stuff on there.
and yeah 20k isnt that much.

EDIT: sorry, this is off topic, please move this somewhere else.

Roadrunner is a 3Mbps service, the highst possible download speed is 300something KBps. Unless you tweaked your modem physically, you can not download faster then the 300something KBps. If you did your service will be shut off.
Unless you are paying $70 a month for the trial 6Mbps service you can't go any faster. Even with the 6Mbps service your maximum download speed is around 700KBps.
A TB a day? With 256Kbps up speed that would take more then all day...
I think it has to be a place that has lots of bandwidth for hosting servers.
The shoutcast thing would fill up a connection quickly at 24k xeven a few hundred.

which is why i said above to get a server, had have the shoutcast host be on that (which is where people would connect to, not your connection, but the server)
you and everyone else who wants to broadcast would connect to that with a winamp plug-in (and password the server up so no one gets in)THEN thats about all. You can have the mass amount of people connecting to it.
I think i'm going to do that. I did the math and as long as it can handle the load i'll just upload the server to allgames.com

Heh. No personal ISP is going to allow the kind of bandwidth Scot is looking for.
Simply put, a cable modem upload (which is what he's looking for) is usually capped at about 384kbps or about 42KBps. This is specifically the case with Road Runner.
He's estimating a 20KBps stream. Multiply 20 by 152 (the most number of users connected to the forum at once). That equals 3040KBps total. That's roughly 3 megabytes per second. Multiply by 60 seconds for ~182 megabytes per minute, multiply by another 120 minutes for the 2 hours he plans on making each show (presumably). That's nearly 22GB streamed per show.
Of course, these numbers are likely to be way off. Since only Apulo and Scot have access to the server's stats, only they can really calculate their bandwidth needs. But I'd guarantee that a normal webhosting firm will not provide the kind of bandwidth necessary.
Also, I failed math. :)
You could pay for a Live365.com station. They have all the bandwidth you need.
