is it possible to create a "studio" mod for a game to allow for virtual live shows?

does this make sense? you could access in spectator mode, and for guests and call-ins they could log in to the "studio" with a customized model.

Machinima is usually edited, what about a live broadcast type version?

Like so you could have peopel from more than one location talking over the client? that would be cool because not only more host's but easier for people to "call" in, but you would want a seperate login thing for them with a different password... I think this is what you are tlakign about anyways.

yes, and the mod could create some custom "actions" and we could add props and weapons. We could have an in engine open mic night.

It really depends on what game you want to use with it. Most anything's possible...

...The only thing that would be kinda iffy would really be the audio portion. How do you know who to stream and when to stream? Even HLTV, if I recall correctly, doesn't stream out the audio of the announcers - you have to have a seperate program running in the background to do that.

It is a very interesting idea nonetheless, and it's very doable - the only question being the actual audio portion and determining who gets to talk when.

Oh wait I get it, liek a virtual studio, my brain didnt comprehend that before, that would be sooo cool.

Well id engines are out there for people to work with.

I don't think modding game code could do it, but I imagine it would be possible to interface something like the Quake 2 (or Q3A source that is supposed to be released later this year or so) engine to recieve the shoutcast stream you're considering using.

It certainly is an idea to consider, at least.

And think of the money you'll save if you want to redesign the set!!

I think, though, what he wants to do is be able to "voice" certain people so they can also talk on the stream. Instead of using the telephone, those that are "voiced" would just use their own headset or whatever to actually talk on the stream, and they can have a conversation with him and all of the spectators would be able to hear it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Scot, but that's where I see you going with this.

I see what you're saying. Yeah. That would be possible. Eliminate shoutcast and do it entirely through the game.

I'd be up for that, as long as I can get a melee weapon to thwack Bobby with during shows. Brings back memories of the original Rocket Arena. :)

No the stream would be coming from winamp
This would be running as well, it would be somewhat like a giant virtual puppet show.
All the audio comes from the stream, the guests etc. would actually call in here, and be voiced that way.

Although if someone could mod a game engine to embed the stream, that would be very cool.

the only problem is the stream lags a few seconds, so the timing between the two would be off.

so what you sare saying is that you want to have the show on shoutcast, which is where people can listen to it, and this. a Mod of a game (Let's say quake 2 or 3) is a add-on to it? you don't need to have it to listen to the station.

I remember reading about some adobe software that let you create a 3d world, it's called Atmosphere (http://www.adobe.com/products/atmosphere/overview.html) and it let's one make a 3d world and allow streaming video and audio, and the player to view and use it is Free, all you have to do is pay for the software to make it. So that may be a opition.

I was going to bring that up but decided not to, I got that when the beta first came out a few years ago, I made some cool worlds. There is also a java applet that runs it in your browser, so all they would have to do it install that.

oh yeah, forgot to say, price tag for Atmosphere? $400........... but you can try out the demo to see if it will work, and if it does and it's easy to use (or whoever makes the studios and such) then this is a good way to go

Here is a link to where you can download the Player so you can view things made in Atmoshpere, (http://www.adobe.com/products/atmosphere/downloadplayer.html)

warning, you can only use it in IE or at least install it from there (at least it seems)
