I'm on the South Portland High School Robotics team, and as a benefit, all members are able to take a free AutoCAD course at Southern Maine Community College for free. This is the course description. It would help you become an engineer.

Bingo.

My dad uses it all the time at home to model machine projects. I would imagine it would help you with laying stuff out, but as for specific ordeals in game design, I doubt it. Taking it certainly wouldn't hurt, seeing as it is a modeling program.

I would really want to do something 3D oriented, but there are no AutoCAD 3D courses during the summer. I'm just wondering if this could help me in Game Design at all.

I don't know about helping with game design, but I'd imagine that the experience you get would help with any concepts you need to learn. Plus, if you learn it and can practice it, it'll be a good skill to list on the ol' resume.

It might help with level design, I would think it would help you get a idea of how your level is set up, but as ender always says " I am just talking out of my ass". But it wouldnt hurt, as my dad says "if its free take three" so, Do it

If you got UT2004, you can hook AutoCAD up to export stuff from it into UnrealED. So yeah, you can use it like a 3D prog like Maya to help you get into modeling/"game design". Just make sure they are going to teach you actual 3D modeling material, not drafting (basic 2d line diagrams and such).

I'll probably take all the available AutoCAD courses next fall which will include 3D modelling.

It can be helpful if you're doing level design, as HAWG said.

Mr Elusive is pretty much on the mark with this one. Although his Maya bias failed to mention 3ds max. ;) Kidding. However, 3ds max and AutoCAD do have some setup similarities so something like3ds max or gmax may be an easier transtion for an AutoCAD user.
