So Voom was offering a chance to try them out, no risk. I didn't have to buy a receiver, I didn't have to pay for installation, and I didn't have to sign a 1 year agreement like DTV.
The receiver is not ready for prime time. The first few days I had issues with it not "booting up" Also, the guide is totally screwed up. You have to start at the first channel every time. So if you're on channel 400, and want to see the guide, it brings it up on channel 100. They said they are updating the software to fix that.
They have 21 Channels (http://www.voom.com/use_it/channel_lineup.jsp)of original HD content, music, 10 movie channels, extreme sports, even a 24-7 auction channel. Most of it is repeated ad nauseum, and it's not all great content, but it all looks amazing.
They also have TNTHD, BravoHD, PlayboyHD, and east and west coast HD feeds of HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime, also The Movie Channel, Encore, and Starz HD, all of which DTV doesn't have.
They also have almost all the standard channels DTV has.
The picture quality sometimes tears when you first change channels, and there are NO PPV channels currently.
Their movie channels Voom HD Movie Exclusives are almost all old movies with like 1-30 being any good. They need a better selection.
The 5.1 audio really makes a difference compared to standard audio, and having widescreen support eliminates all that stretching that is done when you have a widescreen tv.
I am not sure if I am going to stay with Voom, but for the price right now, and the ability to rent a Tivo HD unit this fall, it could keep me as a customer. They difinitely have a better and deeper selection of HD content and that's important to me. If DTV didn't have the NFL or Baseball I'd drop it like a bad habit.
