Can Hollywood not find original stories anymore?

A remake of "The Manchurian Candidate"?
I'm not sure if many of you have seen the 1962 classic "The Manchurian Candidate," but I suggest you try to find it. MGM is reissuing it on DVD next week, maybe just to tweek Paramount's crappy sounding remake with Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep.
Jonathan Demme didn't do a good job remaking Charade as "The Truth About Charlie" but he hasn't learned his lesson apparently.
What seems wierd is that the reason it was called Manchurian Candidate was because in the original book and movie, US soldiers were kidnapped by the communist Chinese, brought to Manchuria and brainwashed to assassinte anti-communist politicians.
Now, in the remake, Iraqis kidnap US soldiers during the 1991 Persian Gulf war and brainwash them.
Should Hollywood try to remake better movies, or try to get better writers?
