Can Hollywood not find original stories anymore?

A remake of "The Manchurian Candidate"?

I'm not sure if many of you have seen the 1962 classic "The Manchurian Candidate," but I suggest you try to find it. MGM is reissuing it on DVD next week, maybe just to tweek Paramount's crappy sounding remake with Denzel Washington, Liev Schreiber and Meryl Streep.

Jonathan Demme didn't do a good job remaking Charade as "The Truth About Charlie" but he hasn't learned his lesson apparently.

What seems wierd is that the reason it was called Manchurian Candidate was because in the original book and movie, US soldiers were kidnapped by the communist Chinese, brought to Manchuria and brainwashed to assassinte anti-communist politicians.

Now, in the remake, Iraqis kidnap US soldiers during the 1991 Persian Gulf war and brainwash them.

Should Hollywood try to remake better movies, or try to get better writers?

As someone who has gotten to know a few trying hard to break into the writing-side of Hollywood (myself, I've given up), I know there are a few good writers out there, but Hollywood is content on dragging out old properties they already own. It's a double-edged sword, if you were given an assignment to rewrite a classic movie would you take it in hopes of selling that great script you have sitting within your computer? I probably would, because trying to get anyone to read something these days is close to impossible without connections.

Hollywood doesn't need to do remakes. They have all the comic books in the world...

I think they're just trying to play it safe... nobody's original anymore...

i can think of 2 remakes off the top of my head Freaky Friday and Cheaper by the Dozen... neither of which i saw but all they had to do is get some well known actors, copy another movie, and make millions upon millions...

I'd rather see them attempt to make something decent and fail then keep throwing out crap...

yeah, but the "i dream of jeanie" movie starring lindsay lohan already has me creaming my jeans. but, it's the only remake that i have really looked forward to. and, i'm looking forward to it, purely for perverted reasons.

Well, I've found another one.

I saw the poster at my AMC theater while I was getting some new CD-Rs and saw "The Longest Yard."

Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Burt Reynolds (as the head coach) and James Cromwell (as the warden) with Steve Austin, Bill Goldberg, Brian Bosworth, Kevin Nash and Nelly.

I have to say this, but I really don't like much of the original.
Yes, the football game at the end is great, but does anyone remember the first boring hour of it?
