I saw this posted on Digg.com. Someone over at the Avsforums got off the phone with a Sony Tech Support and they said if your using any generic components on the PS3, It voids your warrantee. Read about it here. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=789061)

If this is true then it begs the question:

How the hell are they going to know unless you tell them???

What there saying is using something like 3rd party component cables or 3rd party HDMI cables I think.

There are so many third party components for the PS3, That Sony only wants you to use there proprietary components. Which is why they would void your warrantee.

This bit of news for all 12 people who still own a Sony PS3 like Arena Ron.

Regarding Sonys comment about aftermarket or 3rd party cables.
I say to Sony, Bull Shit.
You can not force people to purchase equipment that the mfg chose not to include.

Flavius, you are a man who understands the law. What's your opinion?

It's been a while since I've really delved into the Uniform Commercial Code, so my zero-research, already past my bedtime take would be that, ultimately, it depends on both: a) the language of the express warranty & b) whether that language violates other implied warranties under the U.C.C.

A big question mark for Sony would be justifying the limitation to first-party products. What's the potential harm to the machine in using a 3rd party peripheral and why does use of such peripheral automatically void the warranty, particularly if it's a matter not at all related to its functionality?

Lots of questions marks. But don't forget the source...the Sony CSR could've been all hopped up on Mountain Dew and Doritos, or something. :p

To be fair, this isn't just a Sony issue. If you use ANY unlicensed third party products on any system, either the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and even the Nintendo Wii, it will violate your warranty. This isn't just a Sony thing.

When my Nintendo Gamecube broke, the Nintendo rep asked me if I was using any third party devices. Without thinking things through, I told the rep that I was using third party cables, my warranty was then invalidated.

The next time your Xbox 360 system breaks and the Microsoft rep asks if you are using unlicensed third party cables, or another product such as the Niko Intercooler; watch how fast your "1 year warranty" becomes invalidated if you say yes.

Really, as much as I dislike the PlayStation 3, crap like this is getting old. If you want to bash Sony for the fact that they are selling a $600 dollar game console with no decent games, then that's a perfectly valid point. But attaking Sony for doing something that is standard procedure for any video game console manufacturer is getting kind of old.

So you have to use Sony's $60 HDMI cables?

I don't like the fact that they don't include the first party cables that people want to pay with like component or HDMI. The price they're charging for them is ridiculous.

How would they prove that you weren't using the cables?

Back when my Gamecube broke, and the Nintendo rep asked me if I was using any non-Nintendo brand accessories. I was dumb enough to say yes. Bottom line, if your system breaks under warranty, and they ask you if you're using any unlicensed products, always say no.

I been reading through that thread, And the person posted that he mentioned to the tech support that he was using Psyclone cables. I did a little research and found these so called Psyclone cables at the Best Buy website. There pretty freaken expensive. I dont see how expensive component cables would be the generic kind. Psyclone component cables for the PS3 cost $69.99 while the HDMI one cost $99.99.

this is the truth. basically if they have no way to prove it, lie to them. this pretty much applies to warranties for anything. the worst that happens is if they somehow find out you just don't get a replacement that you wouldn't have anyway by saying "well.. i used a madcatz cable". i would have a new cell phone right now if i hadn't gone retarded and thought the internet police would come down on me if i lied.

as for the sony hdmi cables, that's actually not an insane price for hdmi cables. $40-60 seems to be about the normal price. which is amazing for a sony product, even their cheap headphones aren't cheap anymore now. they price themselves out of the fucking market most of the time.

Yeah it's not something only Sony does, just lazy corporate bullshit to wipe their hands clean of those onerous warranties, that also has the added bonus of not having to worry about the dumb shit some crazy people do to their consoles as well.
