I just installed XP on my old computer, and I have 98 still on it. I need to know how to properly uninstall 98 without destroying anything that I needed. I am tempted to delete the Windows 98 folder, but I want to be safe. Any help would be apreciated.

hmmm... what i would do is back everything up, store it on another computer, make sure i got the drivers to all my stuff with the backup files or on a floppy or a cd. after all that is done, i would F-disk it. uninstalling absolutely everything, completely removed. then i would get XP up and running, get the files back, install drivers, get internet access, and enjoy xp, but there might be a simpler way...

Can someone help me, and can a mod move this to the tech forum?
I would really like to get 98 off, if not- WHATEVA!

What sort of things do you need?

Because honestly, I'd suggest backing all of your important information/files/porn/whatever onto CD or something, and then doing a fresh install. You can upgrade Win98 to XP, but I really don't suggest that. Old files, settings, etc are left behind and can cause instability in a new WinXP install. Just do it from scratch.

I'm getting a new video card and it's about time I reformat my pc... i've yet to do it and it's been about a year and a half... plus I figure the new vid card installation will go over better as well...

My question is how exactly do I go about backing up? And is there a good program I can download to help or do I do it on my own? All i want to backup really is my buddy lists and wordperfect documents... everything else can go.. and I'll just have to redownload firefox, aim, zonealarm, mcafee and thats pretty much it... plus install my games. The more detailed the better, because I'm retarded with this stuff...

Windows Explorer is really all you need. Buddy lists like on AIM are stored on their servers, so you shouldn't need to back anything up.

Otherwise, if all your files are stored in My Documents (as they really ought to be), you should really only need to burn those to CD.

There are a few things you can do to back up Firefox files...

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\some string of characters\

Select everything and then Copy those files to a directory to back them up with everything else. When you reinstall FireFox on the fresh Windows install, you'll want to run FireFox to create a new profile.

Go back to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\some string of characters\ (the string of characters will be different) and paste all of the backed up information. You should have all of your extensions and most other settings (including Themes and bookmarks) back the way you had them before.
