Emerald City Comic Con Day #1 Remix

Today's entry finally covers day one of the huge weekend we're having here in the Northwest.
And you will definitely wanna follow up after tonight's entry.

I'll be quick about my trip getting there (even though delayed), with a few problems, (ie. a bus driver that was just trying to do her job, but a wheelchair stopped even time itself). 30 minutes delay, and this was a bus going straight to Seattle, various riders were not too happy and began to complain. She conveyed, and ignored they're whines, till some offered help, things worked out.

Time of arrival @ Qwest Field in Seattle - 11am.
I breathe a sigh of relief, even with a bag on my back (and my music thumping in my ears). Saw several signs pointing towards the entrance of the north wing. Hey its a whole nother block, this is crazy (right after crossing a street that is milled with traffic at the time). I promptly give the ticket goer my tick, and voila, in.

My first stop, was @ the Sakura-con booth, might as well say Hi to a few old friends, and catch up. Plus finding out what's going on for next weekend, its going to be a lot of fun. Nuff Said.

From there, I moved onward just gazing over the booths with my naked eye. I didnt expect such a huge crowd, but man this is insane. Plus I was surprised to see some familiar face I haven't seen in who knows how long. Even some old buddies of mine are in the industry, and this con. XD madness

My quest begins with a glance over to some indie comics artist & writers. I had a small Q&A session on how they feel the industry is changing "for better or worse". And some D&D discussion with a table (t'was fun). I wasnt aware how many indie breakout artists we have here locally, its truly an honor to meet some of these creative minds (links to follow to these fun & talented people @ the end of tonight's entry)

A bit later, I walk by Mirage Studios booth, I notice vintage guru Jim Lawson talking with an old friend about past stuff. They used to work on a project awhile back. Man they must have caught up, what is it? 5 years. Onto the goodies, I talked with one of the co-writers with the new TMNT comic, and relinquish a ditty on the past, which brought in more people, scary to say, but I felt calm about it. (*then again a poster with a number addressed at the bottom also said "buy me dude! I'm only here for so long!) Actually its true, they had some vintage posters, limited to 100 for our con alone. So I settled down a good $20, and refreshed myself. Holy shit.

Let alone I can't keep content with this to myself, so I drop by good ol' Tycho & Gabe's spot. We catch up on lots of stuff (hey they had some time to talk, cool beans). We talked about PAX, the new game, and them being daddy's.
Truly an "experience" they described it as, but its "a game worth playing".
Then I showed them my TMNT poster, and Gabe ink's in a cool pic of Raph (with his sig & character insignia). Hey which side do I frame now!? XD
I make my piece with the awesome dudes, and move onward.

Aside from the rushing mob (er crowd), I find a character by the name of Wayne Pygram chilling, while eating lunch (the guy was starving). I didn't realize I was @ the Farscape booth till I looked at the table itself. I started a fun conversation with the actor about playing a villain, and being creative. I brought up how much Scorpius pertains to bit of comic book storytelling, and he's also noticed that as well. Plus he shared a bit of news regarding a fun project he's done voice work for (along with Ben Browder & other friends). SciFi is said to mend a plan with this as a new series, look for it later this year (hey i cant give the title, hehe) Before a mob started to grow again, I told Wayne I'd drop by later to talk with everyone next time, he said "sure, we'll be here tomorrow too".

So I move in a swift motion, and noticed a huge line, the line was for Bendis (well known writer, talented fellow) Hey I even brought House of M ish#1, and managed to get the sucker signed. Plus we had a conversation about his current projects, and where he wants to go next. Look for it pretty soon. (its another lovely Marvel title he'll be penning)

Lo and behold, Margot Kidder was also here (and her cheerful self) She is nothing but amazing. She said this, when i showed her my copy of the first Superman film dvd "you do know its $20 for my signature right, kid?" I warmly replied with a smile, "yes ma'am I do". Shared a brief conversation about her portrayal as Lois, and my parents thoughts about her as an actress. Fun times.

I circle over to a few movies companies showing off future titles regarding their films, and side comic projects. 28 Weeks Later, and the Hills Have Eyes are both getting a comic release soon. I wax poetic with my horror love thus far with the attendee, we have some conversation about quite a bit of things. Fun.

I remember my issue of AOD VS Marvel Zombies is looking more bloody rare. So I head over the writer himself on the project, and get the ish engraved. Not to mention a sneak peek of issue #2, definitely worth seeking your teeth into.
Plus the fellow is also a recent daddy. Cool beans.

Then I look @ my event guide, hey where's Frank Cho?! I go on the lookout, seeking the artist who's done dime a dozen artworks that make your heart melt.
I asked other booths, no sighting. Funny.. maybe tomorrow? I really would like to talk with him face to face, have alot to say. =D (and get "Women" signed)
**more on that artbook later

I later drop my good buddy Shane from Atomic Comics, and share a quick conversation since business kicked in again. Said I'd catch up with them next time round. He brought some neat vintage stuff I may need to snag tomorrow.

Bit amount of time passes, and I fight the horde. Things From Another World are sellling all their graphic novels + TPB 50% off. Um, I can't walk away from this. So I check out their booth, and I find copies of Ghost in the Shell 1&2 (the complete edition) and manged to buy em both for $25.00 (*my jaw hits the floor instantly..)

I move to another booth, to escape the madness before I buy something else.
Mad I tell you! I snag some issues of Spiey (30th anniversary), plus ish#13 with the black suit, and a Witchblade art book. Neat.

I stop myself, and think "hey i need to save some money for tomorrow".
And that's where I stop myself, right there. In front of Gigi Edley, why I don't know but I can't stop glancing her way, her eyes just grab you. I will definitely talk to her, first thing tomorrow, she's such a busy woman @ this event.

Be it may, Lani Tapu is also an artist by default, he has some creative talent. From still to plant life, he does a variety during his off time. I asked him about his favorite, he loves each of his art pieces dearly.

After bumping into so many people I decide to grab a bite to eat. um, pizza for $5, and pop for $4. Owwie, and its one slice. One slice! I wanna cry.
Eat my fill and think I should start get going after this.

I drop by a few more indie artists, and leave a note I'll drop by tomorrow to chat again. Then I graze over to my pals from Sakura-Con. Remix on my finds, and Tycho shows up out of nowhere (ninja style). Nuff said.

(*hey wait true believer, its not the end! Bonus stuff! And hey Power Girl, Harley.. wait I'm getting ideas..um)
Bonus item #1! Met some friends that are covering the ECCC event, with interviews, and fan input about comics. I was their faithful test bunny.

Part #2 of 3

So where did my journey begin? Actually.. with Tycho & Gabe from the webcomic http://www.penny-arcade.com/ I shared a bit on what I came to see, since it was my first comic con, and they gave me some tips. (you know those ones) I wasnt sure if they were serious, but they did say "try to survive with some cash left". That and I backtracked after some successful missions, like getting the limited Turtles poster signed (and on the back, by Gabe with a pic of Raph just for sweet kicks).

En route, I even chatted with a few actors (the amazing trio from Farscape, and Lois Lane) I don't know how, but they were right across from another (and by a mob of fans wanting stuff signed, it was a bit scary at first -the mob that is, not talking to them, that was the kick ass, and fun part of my quest.

First, I noticed Lani Tapu's artwork and shared a small discussion on his passion for still, and plants. He told me, he enjoys doing something unique with his own touch of colors (that of watermarks, done in a oil paint style, truly neat I must say). Second, Wayne Pygyrm, I talked with him about being a villain, and carrying on as an actor after the show. He's gladly enjoyed many roles, and is pursuing a bit of interests, especially with old friends. Third, Gigi Edley (gorgeous woman) i must say, its not easy to approach someone with a gleaming smile.. but we had a fun chat about her career and where she wants to go next. That I can't say, that would ruin the fun part. Just keep an eye out for her brilliant self. Fourth, Margot Kidder (Lois!) even though our chat was brief, I had a fun chat about her work in the past Superman films, and quite a bit talent she's carried on throughout her years. And having a copy of the first S film with me, she called me kid, and I just couldnt be more surprised how sweet she really was.

A little later, I walked into a few Marvel writers.. and asked a few well potent questions (due to be thrown in the following day by other fans during a panel). One thing I did get an answer, alot is going to change in the Marvel Universe (some will fall, some will survive) But nothing will be the same after 07'.
*I even dropped by the writer (now daddy) working on the Army of Darkness VS Marvel Zombies. Brilliant guy. And we had a long ass discussion on tons of Evil Dead shit out the yin-yang! XD
**I went a bit stealth on Bendis (and got my copy of House of M signed).. I uh didnt know I was suppose to donate $20.. i feel kinda bad about that one. But I did put an amount in later and shook the kind fellows hand. Its kinda like talking to a priest, mixed with the Shield. **uh Brian, if you or any writer comrades read this, please take note it was a good comment.

Next I dropped by the Mirage booth, talked with some of the new gang. (*right beside Jim Lawson one the old crew behind TMNT) Sharing a chat with the new writer was quite retrospective. it felt funny to share a thought about the past, growing up with a series, and seeing it unfold as an adult (we shared an agreement, as his assistant was blushing). It was then he kinda gave insight, "buy a poster!" I looked @ it, no.25/100.. and did just so, and got it signed by Jim, and this pretty cool writer (with tude) i must say. *sorry i didnt get his name, but a very cool individual nonetheless

Next was the Image booth, I chatted it up with a talented fellow behind this new series that looks like a mix of Bone with the Lion King / Jungle Book. I gotta say its insane, but a fun read. I tried to figure out why the mash up, but he admittedly said he loves disney in the past. So it stuck. Rightly so, and its selling very well.

A lil later, I visited a few indie writers and artists, quite a talented bunch. They have some neat ideas that have not crossed over in comics before. Plus some mid-high school kids are also looking to get into the biz, a mix of anime, spin real stories, or just fables is part of the fun.

Last, I actually got a chance to speak my mind about the event to a crew working for an indepedent show for a station. Well a pretty cool one at that, called http://www.net-25.com/ *they should have a broadcast about the event by now.. and should have it on the net pretty soon. Be sure to look for itThat'.

That's just about a summary I can put down thus far. There's a bit more I would like to say, but some friends would want to keep things hush till later on. So with that, this entry is a done deal. Hope you enjoyed reading.

More next time.
