Why can't you buy General Tso's sauce in the store that tastes like the kind you have at the chinese buffets? I've found 2 sauces so far: Iron Chef and Wegman's Asia BBQ sauce. Both were the most disgusting things I've ever tasted and not even close.

I think its a secret business recipe. Even though they are all competing with each other I think all the Chinese places all agreed to never tell the secrets of the sauces and stuff they use. Aside from the fact that they have a deep frier and most people probably don't, notice how when you try to make Chinese food it NEVER tastes like the take out kind? I know a deep frier would help, but not everything is dipped in hot oil.

i have asked the same question many times... ive found a recipe thats as close as im going to get without that insider information.

1/2 cup water
1 cup chicken broth
1/8 cup vinegar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 cup sugar
2 TB dark soy sauce
2 TB sesame oil
1 tsp chili paste, or more if desired
1 clove garlic (minced)

I go a little light on the sugar and heavy on the chili paste
mix... boil... reduce heat... let thicken... always stirring...

Was there really a General Tso?

Chinks like me learned about Guan Yu, Liu Bei, Ma Teng, Cao Cao, and King Qin. Tso got the short end of the history stick. Reduced to a damn chicken recipe.

Yes, I have made this dish before. Without a doubt using less sugar as well as using real sugar is the way to go.

Hot food makes my allergies flare up...and not the sniffly nose and swollen eyes allergies. I'm talking hives all over my chest, neck, itching irritated skin along with possible chance of anaphylaxis.

I have a harder time finding pesto than teriyaki in super markets. Teriyaki is just gonna be wherever soy sauce is, and then it depends on what company you like.

And, I'm being unfair to General Tso's Chicken. There actually is one restraurant where I really enjoy theirs. However, they use all white-meat chicken (rather than the usual fatty dark meat) and use more of a tempura breading to fry it in, then the sauce is lighter and spicier, served with half-sauteed green beans.

It's yummy.

We have this local place called The Crownery that does the same thing with theirs, they use a very sweet sauce compared to the General Tso most of you relate to. Top that with their sesame seeds and a mound of rice and I'm in heaven.

Now I'm waiting in humongoid anticipation.

Why doesn't one of us just infiltrate the employment of a Chinese restaurant, gain the secret of the recipe, and disperse it among the Tso-yearning populus?

Do we have anybody with the ability to turn Asian at will?
