New id Engine Showcased at WWDC

June 11, 2007 - Over at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, going on as this is typed, John Carmack is showing off id's secret new game engine. MacRumors.com is reporting that Carmack took the stage and showed off the engine for the first time.

The demonstration apparently showcased an "insanely detailed world" made up of 20GB of textures. Carmack says developers will have an unprecedented level of flexibility when building things with the engine. Textures can be manipulated until the cows come home with little to no performance hit. Carmack also said he can "build game first, then throw artists at it," although it is unclear at this time exactly what is meant by that.

The demonstration was put together in just 10 days. id will be showing off more of the engine at E3 next month. We'll have more information on this new technology as it surfaces.

That's the thing. Is Apple going to get in the gaming scene?

No. they are posing and trying to woo developers.

This debut seems more like Carmack wanting to show everyone that you don't need Vista and DX10 to pull off Next-Gen++ graphics, rather than Jobs showing that Mac gaming is coming (back?).

It's really not that impressive. The demo they showed looked like Motorstorm with worse graphics. The people look like slightly rounder Doom 3 models.
