written by Edwin Reischauer, The Japanese Today (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0674471849/qid=1095470546/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-0603513-1366410?v=glance&s=books) is a pretty good read about Japan. Its a little dated, as the book was last revised back in 1995. I've been curious about Japan for awhile, and since I've got the time, I picked up this book and tore through at a fairly fast rate. Even though Reishauer was a professor at Harvard, I felt the book was easily readable and not a damn text.
Reischauer starts off with giving you the lay of the land, moving into its history and then covering the society, governments, and winding up with where Japan sits today (back when the book was originally written). Overall, not a bad read, I think it could use another updating tho'. If you're interested in Japan, ya might want to check it out.
For a rating, I'd give it 4 Bull's Eyes (kinda trying to tie in w/ my name. erm,.....yeah. Didn't work)
