CoD4, best darned FPS out there right now, and I'm including Crysis in this comparison!

Call of Duty 4. Campaign was short & sweet and MP is a blast.

BioShock. I had dreams about the hacking minigame. The hacking minigame. You place different tube tiles together to make some sort of angry goo go to its happy place so you can shoot people with a flying air conditioner.
Most immersive game I've ever played.
The hacking minigame was just Pipe Dream (http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/pipe-dream), really.
Not that it subtracts anything at all from the awesomeness that is Bioshock (in fact seeing that in the game the first time just added points for me). Just saying, hehe..

Bioshock for me. What a great story and atmosphere the whole way through. If Mass Effect hadn't came out this year, this would be GOTY for sure.

This one was a tough one. A lot of these games are great contenders but I would have to go with Halo 3 and here's why:
Call of Duty 4 does look better than Halo. Every moment was intense and multiplayer is a lot of fun but... the game was extremely short and the enemy AI was similar to CoD2 (this is actually not a bad thing but I'll explain why it became a con for me later in this post).
The Orange Box is a great value and I never was a PC gamer but I've always heard about Half Life 2 and how great it is and to finally play the game that I hear so much about was well worth it but maybe I should have played it on the PC when it came out because there were a lot of gripes that i probably wouldn't have if I played it when it was first released on the PC.
BioShock was excellent. My only disappointment with the game was the final boss and the endings and I wouldn't really consider this game a shooter as much as the other nominees.
Metroid Prime 3 is awesome and the it proved that the Wii Remote is better than a controller for FPS. After playing Prime 3 I wish I had a Wii Remote for games like The Darkness when I had to shoot out the lights and was getting somewhat frustrated when I would miss the light bulb by just a smidgen and when I try to slightly move the analog stick I end up moving it over too much... or in Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 I would be getting nothing but head shots in multiplayer and I would have a huge advantage... but where Metroid fails is the lack of multiplayer because if you can do it in Prime Hunters you can do it in Prime 3... i know this would have delayed the game further and it wasn't Retro that did Prime Hunters but when you're comparing it to these other shooters Metroid does not compare.
I have yet to play Crysis but I hear good things but since I haven't played it I can't really give me opinion.
... and The Darkness was a let down. I was looking forward to this game because I loved Escape from Butcher Bay and this game got great reviews but I don't know what those reviewers were thinking. The story was terrible... i'm sorry but If I see a dude with eel-like tentacles coming out of his back i'm not trying to spark a conversation with him plus the part where he gives up the Darkness... but he still has the Darkness... i got confused. The side quests were weak and multiplayer was a joke. I don't even know if this is a rental.
Now back to Halo and CoD4... here's where I give the extra nod to Halo 3. In Call of Duty 4 the enemies all spawn from the same place and do the same exact thing so you can beat the game by just memorizing the chain of events. For example if you're in a room... an enemy comes through a door and another enemy comes through a window and kills you... when you start the game over those same events happen again so you just have to remember to point the gun at the door first... cap him... then point towards the window. This is not really a bad thing though... because mostly all shooters play this same exact way but after playing Halo 3 the enemy AI is just good. The enemies will do something different every time so the more you play Halo the better you become in the game rather than the better you become in memorizing. The multiplayer is also better than CoD4's multiplayer with the good matchmaking and several game modes. Still both great games.

I guess COD4 shows that tried and true can still beat something that tries to be different.

Voted for COD4 because of its great, but short, single player and the intense multiplayer. Plenty of bonuses in playing online like unlockables, ranks, class customization, party invites, and a huge number of game modes. Single player arcade mode is a sweet bonus for completing it, and old school mode for online play is exciting stuff. The only things that could have put it even more over the top would have been the ability to co-op in the main campaign, vehicles, mess with some of the maps the way that you can with Halo 3's Forge, and record your sessions in the same way. The series also reinvented itself from a WW2 shooter with huge success.

i'm gonna have to go with UT3.
i really liked COD4 (which suprised me, since i really didn't like any other games in the series), but UT3 brought back the crazy imbalanced fun that UT is known for.

The Orange Box: I am not a big fan of shooters, but when I got into Half-Life 2 I was hooked. I had to play them all. Also I am not big into multiplayer, but Team Fortress 2 had something over me that I couldn't put it down either. And with Portal does that really need to be explained.

I voted for Bioshock... I think as far as shooters go, COD4 is more of a shooter than Bioshock, but Bioshock was a better game overall so it got my vote.
Gotta go with Call of Duty 4. To me, the game had more "this is fucking cool!" moments than BioShock. Even if they didn't last very long, they were awesome. Who cares if the game is only 5-6 hours long.
If it weren't for CoD 4, I'd have definitely voted for BioShock. Great game but I didn't find it wowing me like parts of CoD 4 did. That and I didn't see what was so amazing about the game's story.

I voted for Call of Duty 4. The single player campaign alone is just so good it is not even funny. Wanted to vote for Bioshock but COD4 has a more lasting memory with me.

I love TF2 on The Orange Box. I wish it had come out a little earlier. I think more people would have given it a shot before Halo 3 and COD 4 came out.

What a great year it has been for FPS. This is a tough one but I am going for what I am feeling in my heart as the best FPS this year.
August comes and Bioshock comes out... I played it... finished it... and said.. "This game is AMAZING!"
September came and Halo 3 was released... I played it... finished it... (in the same day I bought it) and said "This game is AMAZING!"
October came and The Orange Box came out... I played it... finishe all 4 games and kept playing TF2... and again said... "This game is AMAZING"
November came and Call of Duty 4 hit... I played it... finshed it and all I could say was... " " ... nothing
CoD4 got my vote for making me speachless
