Rounding out the two books on Japan that I got comes Japan: A Concise History 3rd Ed. by Milton Meyers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0822630184/qid=1095995640/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-3520495-8104758?v=glance&s=books). And you know what? It is. Good ol' Milton successfully condenses centuries of history down into a surprisingly readable 280 pages. For a short book, this is very detailed. Starting with the earliest recorded history, Mongol invasions, WW1 & WW2 on up to to more recent times (this edition was came out in 1993). Each chapter ends with a chronology of major events the major leaders during each time period. The book also includes a glossary. Overall I was impressed with the readibility of the book. And the price wasn't bad either, I picked it up for $16.95 at my local Border's bookstore.
