Hi I am brand new here (love it!) and I have a simple question... is there any place where I can find out about the best side scrolling shooters like contra, gunstar heroes, or metal slug? Or if there is any recomendations from anyone else?

Try out: Alien Soldier, Metal Warriors, Sunset Riders, and Wild Guns (IMO Best Shooter Ever on SNES)

Thanks for the advice! Ive got to admit that alien soldier deffiently is one of the most insane. I mean you only shoot a couple of aliens before you reach each boss... Its awsome (hey it is by Treasure of course), Its sad that this is one game that never made it to America, it is a hard to beat game, but highly recommended.

Speaking of Treasure...Check out Ikaruga for Gamecube. It's a great game. It's a old skool, side scrolling shooter.

I can’t wait for Alien Hominid to come out. That’s diffidently one side scroller not to be missed!

God yes! I cant imagine anyone not knowing about this game!

watching the video on www.alienhominid.com makes me glad that there are still people out there who treasure side scrollers.

If anyone still is unsure of this game you have got to check out the original flash game! not only is it a great side scroller but proably one of the best flash games!

Yeah I liked the flash game on Newgrounds, too bad it was only one level. :(

Dude, you basically read my mind! To me, nothing beats fast pace destruction only side scollers could fill!

Dualist, have you ever played Metal Slug X on playstation? After beating the entire game, you get "Another Mission" which is a bunch of mini games where you rack up points to unlock more mini games! Some are the best, like blow up as many buildings as you can, or nock out as many guys with a rock! Im still working on unlocking all of them!

speaking of Metal Slug... who has played Metal Slug 3 on xbox... MY word! its is so impossible to beat! I mean you only get the one continue? Ive gotten to the last level but the last level is long an hard how can anybody beat that? That was deffinently a feature SNK should have reworked, maybe when 4&5 comes out it will have a better continue feature.

I can't wait for Alien Hominid either. The flash game was absolutely awesome. It shares a lot of similarities with Metal Slug i.e. grenades and vehichles but whose complaining?

You know, I myself would like to mention some grand side scrollers for anyone wondering too.

Im personally stuck in the NES days, and a few I would like to mention are proably the most obsure to the most of you (I think).

Besides the obvious Contra and Mega Man...

G.I. Joe (surprisingly so, with awsome bosses and vehicles to ride and such!)

Silkworm (you can be a helecopter or a jeep, either way stuffs gonna be blown up)

Little Samson (proably the best obscure game in my opinion in the entire NES library, very rare game, but the option to choose over 4 characters mid game, not to mention insane bosses like dragons that cover the entire screen and grim reeper style bosses too, its a Nintendo collectors dream!)

I'll check out Little Samson, thanks. :D
