First a little background and an explanation of my motivation for asking.
I currently work as a Quality Technician for a medical device manufacturer. My job requirements include control of the calibration system for test equipment, internal process and product quality audits and revise corporate processes and manufacturing work instructions.
My background is mostly in manufacturing of capital products, my company builds xray machines for sports health, osteoporosis assessment, and detection of breast cancer.
Without bragging, I'm very good at what I do and I like it but I have been increasingly tempted to move into the gaming industry on the quality side albeit in a lead role.
So my questions are:
What is the structure of a QA Testing department? Is it just a QA Manager and a bunch of testers underneath or are their multiple supervisors?
What is the process of testing and reporting? Is there standard practices?
How much of a software testing background is needed?
Salary for a tester and manager? If you don't feel comfortable telling me here I understand. Ranges would be appreciated. If you tell me in PM I can guarantee confidentiality.
Is there room for advancement?
Any other insights would also be appreciated. Experiences good and bad are welcome. I'm sure that I will have some more questions as I continue to look into it more.
Thanks in advance.
