Writing Collections

Can anyone recommend books that collect pieces by good writers/journalists?

I'm reading Hunter Thompson's The Great Shark Hunt. There are some gems in there, but it also has a fair share of rambling. I'd like to read some articles from a slightly less... "fringe" author.

I like Bill Bryson, Stephen Jay Gould and John McPhee. Some of their works tend to be books instead of collected essays.
