View Full Version : Is anyone sick of the merger?

I'm sorry but this has got to stop. I remember when G4 was in it's rumor stage, WAY before it got it's own channel and in a few game mags it was being touted as "The only channel that's all video games, all the time" now that's not the case.
I have nothing against these TechTv shows, but I just don't care about them. When I turn on G4 I want to see games not a show about puppets.
I haven't really done any in depth look at it but it seems to me the tech shows are out numbering the G4 shows. Whenever I turn on the channel it's always some TechTv show. It's annoying.
I liked having my all video game channel and now I want it back. I really think the merger is going to be G4's downfall.

Yes. I can't even think of any shows G4 still tapes, probably because I haven't watched in a while. It's also killing the forums, as we all know, so I won't drag that out.

Ironically, replace every instance of G4 with "TechTV" in your original post and you'd think you'd be reading a post by someone from TechTV. They even think the G4 content is outnumbering their TTV content by FAR!

Well as we've seen on the forums the TTV'ers are enraged, whereas i'm just annoyed.
Oh and Tedakin i'm not talking about the merger on the forums so don't hate me k?
I just think the channels need to be split again. Comcast has TONS of useless channels that TTV could use. I mean for christ sakes they run FOUR nick channels. They can give one to TTV.

I was a big techtv fan, I watch a few shows like Tech Live, The Screen Savers, Call For Help,X-Play and Unscrewed but I didn't really care for the rest of the shows. When I heard about the merger I thought that it was a bad idea but now I am starting to like some of G4 shows. I also got sick of the bitching about the merger thats why I came here.

Honestly I just don't watch the channel much after the merger. All I had was Tech TV and I wanted G4 BTW I love most G4 content. The problem is Tech TV had a ton of DAILY content. I watch lots of 24 hour news channels, they always have something new or semi new going on. Tech TV I used to watch Tech Live and The Screensavers quite a bit. Now they dumped Tech Live and TSS has a ton of reruns. On the G4 content it is all RERUNS! Over and over again. I love JD, G4TV.com, Pulse, Arena and Icons. All interesting, but reruns! So basically I may watch the channel about 4 or 5 total hours or less a week. They need fresh content to keep me interested.

I was sick of all the whining from both sides about how one side has more shows on than the other and how one is better than the other. The X-Play guys and hardcore Nintendo guys who think Tommy is biased against Nintendo was also pissing the hell out of me. Only one show I really cared for from either side that got axed was Call For Help. But I haven't wrote a single message on the G4TTV boards complaining about it. All good things must come to an end. What I used to love about G4 was it's great, simple feel. I felt that they were just like us and were on the same level as us. The one thing I never really liked about TechTV was the lack of this. Most of the hosts seemed untangible for the fans. The major exceptions to this were Cat Schwartz (giving you AIM out on tv takes huge balls) and Leo Laporte.

The only thing a really watch from TTV is The Screen Savers. Ill occasionally watch FFM if its on, but it rarely is.
I am really sick of all the bitching from the TTV side on the forums. My god there is SO much spamming, flaming, stupidity, etc in the merger forum.

Oddly enough, when I want to watch TechTV programming, I can't because it seems that G4 programming is always on.
About the only shows I found worth watching anymore were Pulse and Icons.
At least TechTV made a concerted effort to market to my demographic.

I have nothing against these TechTv shows, but I just don't care about them. When I turn on G4 I want to see games not a show about puppets.Just deal with it. While G4 was an all game channel, you have to question some of its content. Number one, with so many reruns of all their shows, it becomes tiresome to watch. Not only is every episode of every show run into the ground, but it's not like many of them were terribly informative either (That's partly because most of the time they were reruns), but in most of the shows there was just lots of unnecessary fluff. Now that they've merged, it lightens up on the reruns a little, and you get very helpful, informative shows like The Screen Savers (I've learned so much from just the few whole episodes I've watched, not to mention the tech tips and the people in the forums) and X-play, which sets itself apart from Judgment Day in that it focuses more on reviewing the games.
I haven't really done any in depth look at it but it seems to me the tech shows are out numbering the G4 shows. Whenever I turn on the channel it's always some TechTv show. It's annoying. The shows are aired in blocks. If you take a look at the schedule (http://www.g4techtv.com/html/schedule.asp) you'll see that they usually alternate between a couple hours of G4 programming and an hour or two of TechTV programming. I think most of the time the G4 shows actually do outnumber the Tech shows.
I liked having my all video game channel and now I want it back. I really think the merger is going to be G4's downfall.[/quote] There's no way having the two networks merge is worse than keeping them separate because it's likely G4 wouldn't still be around had it not been for the merger. And having an all-games channel might have been a great idea, but in G4's case, the merger was for the better--You got the feeling that they were just taking the "all games" idea and sitting on it, not really moving forward, with all the reruns and such.

I have never watched TechTV before the merger, but now because of it I'm seeing how many awesome shows I missed (Screen Savers, Unscrewed, X-Play mostly). So I'm definately not sick of it, but if they were to stop and go back as seperate channels, I'd prolly be watching TechTV alot more now.

I didn't get TTV before the merger so all these new shows are fine with me. I'm happy with the way things turned out. Less reruns = more time I'll watch the channel and lets face it...there were tons of reruns before the merger.
Besides, the merger has allowed G4 to get into millions more homes. With that they now can have a little more money to put into their programs. I'm just not seeing the downside.

I can't agree with this statement enough. Don't forget they also got rid of Call for Help which was a daily live show. I'm kind of dissapointed in the small amount of new shows on G4. It seems like I'm always watching reruns and I'm now seeing G4TV.com retro shows 2 and 3 times.

Yeah, on their last taped show with Patrick, he pretty much said he wasn't going but it was a personal choice. The network did want him to go.
Kevin did post a list on his site http://kevinrose.typepad.com/. Check out the entry for July 13, 2004. He talks a little more about it. Here's who's going besides Kevin taken from his site:
Making the move –
I'm glad to report that many of your favorite on-air staffers will be making the move down to LA:
Sarah
Disassembling Windows as we speak : )
Dan
Taking advanced teleprompter classes (just messin Dan)
Yoshi
Working on THE coolest mods I have ever seem him create…amazing
Joshua
Bigger LAN party, more players
Leo
Still loven the bay area, but not missing a beat with his daily tips
We're all really excited to get started on the new show. Stay tuned right here for updates over the next few weeks.
He's updates his site fairly regularly and posted some pics of the new set under construction at http://kevinrose.typepad.com/

At least that's what Patrick said on air.

My thought is it seems they didn't think the whole merger out before doing it. To me it seems as if G4 in a scramble to have credibilty as a prosperous network grabbed up what they though would be a great addition & way to instantly get nielson ratings (TechTV has been around long enough they are rated, whereas G4 still had to wait).
Also the "powers that be" seem to think gamer geeks & tech geeks are the same thing, and yes while there is overlap there I don't think mixing a full gamer geek network with a full tech geek network was a wise move. Older tech geeks are not into the gaming shows & the younger gamer geeks are not into the more thoughtful/insightful shows.
Why screw up a good thing?
I think Jim Downs is behind it all, first dumping Wil Weaton then merging networks, what's next? 8) :smt019

Ask me before the merger, and I would have said it was brilliant. Now that its finished and we've seen the final product (more or less), I regret ever praising it.
Part of my feelings have to do with the apparent inappropriate mish-mash of two fairly distinctive and barely overlapping communities. But most of it is the appearance that TechTV was purchased just for its audience and not for the distinct content they provided.
With the exception of The Screen Savers and XPlay, all TechTV content has been relegated to late-night/mornings.
I had expected G4 to take a clue and retool itself to a more tech oriented network. Instead its gaming, with some tech thrown in.

Meh I think some of the people at G4 have their heads up their asses. Theres lots of things that could be improved upon, even just simple things, yet they don't even bother. I don't think they really give a damn about about what the fans want, their just trying to become some big network to get money. I mean they don't even invite the gamers to G-Phoria how stupid is that? Thats one of those "little things" I was talking about. One of the worst decisions ever though: Pissing off Wil Weaton and causing him and Travis Oats to quit. Those two were the best. I loved Arena because of all the comedy they provided, now I think it just kind of sucks. Sure some people still like it, but I haven't really watched it in over a year or whenever it was those two left, just a few times to check out the current hosts.

As much as I like Wil and Travis as people, they actually started it and pissed off G4 first. Everything G4 did was reactionary.
Also, the actual contestants on Arena denied the claims that they were mistreated or misled during the tapings of the show.
However, somehow all of that information was miraculously left out of Wil's Slashdot entry. I wonder why...

To be fair that is the only thing I have read is Wil's posting on what he says went down. But I wouldn't really think him and Travis started it first. I mean why would they purposly try to piss off the people at G4 when they had pretty good jobs and they seemed to both be enjoying them? And I thought it was mostly just Wil involved not Travis? It sounded more like he was quitting as well just out of support/protest of Wil going. It would be nice if they could come back and be on some type of show again together, to this day they had the best chemistry of any of the hosts on G4. Sorry Scot.

That's because G4, and Jim Downs, took the high road publically and just let Wil and Wil's fans believe whatever they wanted. It wound up not hurting G4 much in the long run, since most people that watch the network now don't even know Wil and Travis exist.
However, I'll give you a little bit of a tidbit, since I was told most of the stuff in confidence by JD (who I've known almost as long as Scot). The reason Wil's pay was cut was because he stopped showing up for work. Betcha never heard that on his blog, you just heard that they cut his pay. But hell, if I had an employee who decided never to come into work, I'd do something about his paycheck, too...
Arandar

I still have a hard time believing this though. I mean I don't get why he would just decide to not bother to show up at all and then bitch about it. Unless he wanted to be fired or quit or something. Now while I'm not calling you a liar, you know I would never fully believe what you tell me right? While Wil might have had his his version, G4 will have their own version to make themselves look good. There could have been a reason why he didn't want to show up for work, who knows?
For the record though, I never even heard of Wil Weaton until first seeing Arena, I then later found out he was in Star Trek the Next Generation and started to watch it a little bit since thats the best Star Trek series. I'm not a Trekkie I'm Star Warsy? Or whatever the hell you would call someone who prefers Star Wars. So I wasn't completly a "fan" of all his work, mostly just Arean since him and Travis were funny as hell.
Blackwolf

I know you won't believe a word I say, because your mind's already made up.
But there's a reason Wil can't get work right now. There's a reason he's now an author instead of an actor, or the only time you find him doing new stuff is a PAX Movie Of The Week. He's pretty much tarnished his own reputation within Hollywood.
Great guy, I've met him. But he sure can't keep a gig. He's got some attitude "They owe me something, I was in Stand By Me/Star Trek" problems. G4 tried their best to keep him, but you know, when you don't show up for work and then demand expensive accomidations to be able to film an episode at Microsoft's headquarters in Seattle (the episode was moved to the G4 studios in LA because they couldn't afford to send Wil to Seattle for the weekend to film it) I can kinda see why G4 felt they were better off without him.
I wish both of them the best in life - last I saw Travis (at E3 last year, not this year) he got a great writing gig at Atari. He's happy. Wil's happy being a top selling author with his books Dancing Barefoot and Just A Geek. He's just raised a bunch of money for breast cancer research. He's doing fine for himself.
His attitude just didn't mesh with G4's, and it's a shame, but it's not 100% G4's fault either.
Arandar
08-04-2004, 05:03 PM
N I never said I would never believe what you say, I said I would never FULLY believe everything you say. I heard Wil's version of what happened from him, I am now hearing G4's version of what happened 2nd hand from you since you heard it from someone at G4. Everyone always tells things the way they want to be told to make them look the best. While I know now that not everything Wil said was the full truth, I doubt everything G4 has said is the absolute truth and they did nothing wrong either. No one is perfect, I doubt G4 is guilt free in all of this either, their both to blame. Not like it matters now though. At least its good to know their both doing well for themselves nowadays.

Actually, what I can say is that all of the "events" posted on the Slashdot entry between Wil and G4 management are most likely accurate. Those did happen. There was arguments about pay and there were questions about the validity of some of the matches.
However, Wil left out information such as the cause of those events, leaving the reader to believe that it just happened out of the blue because they had something against him. And I'm sure G4 left out information when they told me, because they knew that eventually I'd start blabbing it. (I did keep it quiet for a long time, since I heard this story at last year's E3.)

You hit the nail on the head. This is exactly the way I feel, grabbing an established network with a good sized core audience to try & bolster it's own status.
Before the merger I too thought it was going to be a good idea, but after the other day no.
When I saw an episode of The Screen Savers where they built a gaming machine the whole episode & nothing else, no news, no tech help, nothing, just bulding a gaming machine & clips from old episodes that pertained to building said machine(best mouse, monitor etc.). This is not The premise of The Screen Savers. It's suposed to be a all tech news & tip magazine show, not an all gaming tech show. In the past they built gaming machines yes, but that would be a small segment on each show over the course of the week. Each segment would consentrate on one component of the machine. Then at the end of the week they would unveil the compleated machine.
No G4 did not change to Games, Gigabytes, Gagets, & Gizmos. It sitll is the all gaming network, with barely a clue.

Unfortunately no, Patrick is staying in the Bay Area, though hints were dropped that he'll appear as a guest from time to time. No one wanted him to leave, but he decided to stay. I think someone posted earlier in this thread that his wife had a sweet job and he wanted to stay so she could keep it. The network wanted him, he just chose family first. I posted earlier that Kevin Rose (http://kevinrose.typepad.com/) had a list on his website that show'd who was going from the TSS on-air crew.
I read somewhere that Leo was going to do TSS for the Canadian branch of the network, but I can't remember where I found it. Maybe on his website, but I don't remember what the URL was. Hope this helps.

Leo did announce on his web site that he is going to be doing his "Call For Help" show on the Canadian version of TechTV.
Another great, highly rated show that for some strange reason G4 decided to drop. Probably because it was hosted by an old guy & not some young hot shot with a can of mousse in his hair to make him look wild & edgy.

:smt028 Too bad, I would've liked to have seen it. I never did get to see it once the merger went through

It was a great show. Leo really seems like a fun guy, and the way the show was setup they never came off as know it alls. I used to watch both TSS and CFH the next morning, when they were back to back. Now I rarely see TSS.

G4 canceled the show before they merged together. I got to see the last show it was fuckin' great, they had a blow out of a good time.

Nobody said the "powers that be" at G4 were smart.

I absolutely hate the whole G4 TechTV merge, I am totally sick of Martin Sargent and the Screen Savers, also, the people on X-Play don't deserve to review games on television, their opinions are totally one-sided.

I wish they would of kept some of the shows from G4 like Blister.

Me thinks they should have kept the networks separate when they bought TechTV.

I really think the merger is going to be G4's downfall.
i dont really care :smt064

I only watched G4 once...I never even had the channel (I seen it at a friends house before). The only show I liked when I watched it was, G4tv.com. I honestly don't post at G4 anymore, I got sick of all of the BS on that forum. Tedakin, Captain N and a few others were the only people I liked at G4, or I should say, knew. Anyway the point i'm trying to get to is, if you don't like it, simply don't watch it.

Watching the Screen Savers, I realized what problem I have with this show. The high school bully still lurking inside me wants to pound that geeky little Kevin Rose every time I see him! From his dorky haircut to his "I know more about computers than you" attitude. Bring back Patrick! :)

I hate it for one reason...
Let's say Portal was on G4TV, I would be like ahhh man, that's okay I'll just watch The Screen Savers.
Or lets say Robot Wars was on TechTV it would be okay becuase I would change to G4TV.com.
But now....when Robot Wars is on one channel...it is on both! AHHHHHHH

The merger is done and there is nothing any of us can do about it. Let the executives who are responsible handle this. They can decide, if they want to , rather to dismantle the merger or not.

G4 tends to appeal to a much a younger crowed. Tech TV fans have an older fan base.

I'm personally not happy with the merger, but I won't complain, since there's no turning back. Personally, I'd rather have it G4 by itself, but there's nothing I can do.
Since it's here to stay, we might as well be content with it.

Look, every once in awhile people always complain about the merger. I have no clue why they complain, it's not GOING TO CHANGE anything! The merger is here to stay, so stop complaining or CHANGE THE DAMN CHANNEL!
nooooooo badreligion is a memba here :(:(:(..yeah the merger sucks

God, I'm tired of people talking about it.
I'd rather see more shows, with a few off topic, than watching the same 2 DECENT shows over and over for a month.
The techtv merger saved both their asses, end of arguement.

I was a big fan of G4 in its previous form but I'm trying to give the new format a chance. I think both networks lost some of their identity and content. The new mix isn't as strong as either of its parts but there are so few options out there that we're kind of stuck. In time I'm sure they'll get over the growing pains and find one direction. Any time you have two strongwilled fan bases you're bound to have some people unhappy. Live with it or else look elsewhere.
