View Full Version : CUSTOM CONTEST #1:One last round of advice P4 or AMD 64?

I am putting together the components for a new PC. I am currently torn between a 3.2 gig athlon or 3.2 gig P4
I figure the rest is easy. It's just the processor and mother board i need to make a decision on.

Please help

Well I'm in the process of building a new PC to and I went with AMD. In the past I've only had intel but I'm kinda broke and I've heard good things about AMD. So I would say go with the Athlon 64 save some money to get another componenet you may need. From what I know the AMD chipset is faster now, at least until more people use the hyper threading technology of the P4's. But I'm guessing hyper threading wont be fully implemented for another few years, so I'd just save some money and go with what is better now. :-D

whats the fastest Athlon cpu i can get and what motherboard should I buy? I will probably regret building this myself, but i can't wait a month for some of these custom building places. Grr..

Well firstly it's not that hard to build one heck if I can do it...well...you know the rest of that one. I heard a lot of good things from Newegg.com and I ended up getting my components from them (got here fast and undamaged).

Also how much are you looking to spend on the PC? The best of the best Processor chips are near $600-$700. I would recommend something in the high-mid range of CPU's that way you can save a lot of cash and then would just have to upgrade 1-1.5 years sooner. Its either that or spend double :). As for mobos I personally went with an Asus but I've heard great things about ABIT as well. Oh another thing to keep in mind when looking at AMD's (you prolly know this though) is that their CPU's appear to be slower than Pentiums. That's not true as Intel changed the way they calculate the GHz on their systems.

Well here's the stuff I'd recommend....(Damn I have too much free time)

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 1MB L2 Cache, 64-bit Processor http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-426&depa=1

MOBO - ABIT "KV8-MAX3" K8T800 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket 754 CPU http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&DEPA=1

Well those are just suggestions just check out other options and match em up till you get something that looks like what you want and is in your pricerange. Memory is memory just be sure you pick up some dual channel. And hten the other stuff..., HD, CD/DVD drive, etc.

The last hard thing to choose will be a video card, most people are going with the new ATI 9800 pro (I think). It's supposed to be slightly better than Nvidias new card. However both cards supposedly have deals with game companies to have certain games run better on their cards. I think Doom3 will run better on a ATI. But you may wanna check on that as that was just a rumor.

Well hope this helped somewhat...and maybe with a new PC you'll see how PC games cant die

That CPU is only 2.2, shouldn't I be looking at 3.0 minimum?

BigEasyWhoDats
07-13-2004, 03:13 PM
yeah at least 3.0. I have a 3.06 P4 and i couldn't be happier

EmpyII
07-13-2004, 03:18 PM
here's a good article that'll explain why the AMD is only 2.2 and an intel one shows as 3.2. It's pretty informative. http://www.overclockers.com/tips634/

also here is another (a bit older) article as well...http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/athlon64-fx51_22.html

ok last one I swear...this is from PCWorld magazine so might have a lil more cred...http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,112601,00.asp

Scot there's also www.pricewatch.com another great site for pc parts...

Oh and i suggest you go with Intel P4... as far as I know they've always been a step or 2 ahead of AMD and it's probably a wiser choice.

sorry intel fans but it is a proven fact that the latetst amd 64 chip is the fastest on the market. and as far as 3.0 well u need to look at intels new marking formula, uhmm it looks alot like amd. i suggest a 939 pin mobo and a aamd64 3500 that will give u the edge u need in building your pc.

Well actually that's right if you're talking about the basic retail chips. Intel's newest high performance chip the P4 3.2 hyperthreding extreme, beat out the AMD's FX-51. That's according an article in PCworld.

Cant guess, where is the video card?
If it's onboard I suggest you bring it back NOW That's not really fair. nForce2 onboard sound is just fine and not susceptible to the issues that cheap Crystal sound chipsets of old suffered from.

I'm surprised that you got this rig for under $1k, Scot. I didn't know you associated with people who sold wares out of the back of their truck!

Reffy

I didn't say onboard sound. I use onboard sound, and I just so happen to have an nForce chipset. But I would never use onboard Gfx.

After looking at these new specs, I don't think windows XP pro would be a good pick for a OS, because there is no point in getting it unless you want Remote Desktop, and a few other odds and ends that are not really needed by a normal user. I remember seeing a chart somewhere on microsofts site with the difference between the two, i'll have to find it.

i'm also not a fan of onboard audio, if you can, go with a creative Sound blaster audigy 2.

no you have "No speakers" on there, i'm guessing you are going to get Speakers, or just use headphones. For speakers, I have heard that the Logitech z-2200 is a great set.

DeadMan
07-26-2004, 10:25 AM
That config is around $1000, probably a little less, depending on where you got it from.

agn
07-26-2004, 03:05 PM
The XP pro is for the 2 GIGS of memory, I dont think home supports that much. Also it's 3.2 with 1 meg cache, I have a soud blaster already, speakers already, DVD burner already, so i didn't need them again.

total was 1424, i priced it part by part with newegg and it's very close. This way they built it tested it and guaranteed it for a year.
The best part is that it's here and it's fast. I didn't realize the x800 was the new ATI card. I was going to get a 9800 256 meg, but why spend the money on it, if the new one is coming soon for around the same price.

i got the x800 pro, and it is really kickass. i havent tested it with Doom 3 yet, but i'm sure its gonna be a playable framerate. its totally worth the $400 dollars.
