With Half Life 2 on the way and the Radeon 9000 just begging to get pulled, I picked up the X800 from ATI. I got the Pro version with 256 meggies and ran to the door like a 6 year old on christmas day when BROWN rolled up with my package.

The install went fine, how many menu bar and system tray icons do software and hardware companies think we want? The corner of my task bar is starting to look like a jar of marbles.

I fired up Doom 3, raised every setting possible and hit start. Definitely a better looking game with the X800 than the Radeon 9000, but jesus that game is dark. I know it's been beaten like a dead horse, but even todays poorest miners have lights attached to their helmets. The marine is also not smart enough to wedge the flashlight into some part of his outfit.

The big test was hooking it up to the TV. I want to use the 60" wega for pc gaming and the previous cards didn't support the resolution making desktop use unbearable.

The new card still can't do it. Sorta. The ATI card sends the sync signal through the green on an RGB cable that you have to use. I have a DVI switcher that lets the TV share its one DVI connector with Direct TV, Voom, and the PC. When you try to set the resolution with the DVI cable, it won't allow a custom resolution and keeps the top, bottom, and sides from being visible.

Apparently the new NVidia cards don't have this problem.

Once the cables were in, powerstril popped me into a beautiful 1152x648 resolution that fits nicely.

I played Counter-Strike Source and was happy to see a "widescreen" mode option that helped fill the screen with the game (although cutting off a bit of the side communication menus.)

Im not sure about anti-aliasing though, 2x 4x how many x is worth it before you get a hit.

Anyone using this card?

I just got a 128mb Radeon 9600 AGP card... I'm too poor to get PCI Express. :(

As for Doom3...it's dark because that's how it is meant to be played. Do yourself a favor and dont get the "duct tape mod". It makes the game easier, but it ruins the experience. Nice move with the x800 though, that should make for some nice gaming. As for hooking it up to the TV, either get an Nvidia card or wait for an x800 to be made that will support output to a tv.

welcome to the club man. i've played and beat Doom 3 on this card, and the glare was so bad on it. i got a dark blanket and put it over the main source of light in my room (aka my window) so it can be nice and dark, no glare. the card runs pretty good, but i havent tried any of the tv modes.

cant wait to run Half-Life 2 on this biatch.

To make Doom 3 lighter without ruining the experience or downloading a mod you can do this.
Open the console (CTRL+ALT+~) and type "r_gamma1.3". That makes it a little smoother too.
The game will run better to if you go to your OpenGL control panel and enable triple buffering.

well, ATI's bringing out a real bad boy now.

The x850 is looking pretty sweet, and now they're going dual slot and pci-express only.

and the second slot part also works to let hot air vent out. good idea.

Who needs it though? The current generation 6800's and x800's run everything fine, and then some.

HL2 lags a little on 6800 ultra. when a lot of explosions go off at once.

yeah, when it really gets crazy, like during all the urban combat against striders, it runs really slow and lags.

i mean, on the x800 it goes down to 60 fps, while at other times its at 100.

Interesting since the human eye cant see anything faster than 60 fps...
