Red Sox Win is Rolaids' Loss...in Boston, at Least; Red Sox Fans Have Relief for First Time in 86 Years; Sales May Spike in St. Louis, New York City

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 29, 2004--For the first time in 86 years, the Boston Red Sox have brought home the World Series trophy. Good news for New England - bad news for Rolaids(R) antacids.

"New England loves the Red Sox and because of that, they have been some of our best customers - especially come Pennant time," said Bob Uccardi, Rolaids brand manager. "But with this year's victory, Rolaids antacids are not needed to soothe New England fans' upset stomachs, stressful heartburn and acid indigestion."

Rolaids was introduced in 1954, a year in which the New York Yankees won the World Series, much to Boston's chagrin as the Red Sox were 42 games back. And sales of Rolaids typically peak in New England in September, with Boston sales alone having spiked as Game 7 of the ALCS came and went in 2003. While it's unclear whether or not it's coincidence, Rolaids marketers have counted on New England sales to spike in the fall.

"Looks like this year we may need to send some extra shipments to New York and St. Louis," said Uccardi.

In appreciation for the many decades of Boston fans' loyalty to the brand, Rolaids is sponsoring the commercial-free broadcast of the Red Sox victory parade on Saturday, October 30. Fans in the Boston area should also be on the lookout this weekend for souvenir samples of Rolaids Softchews, the unique, chewable form of the fast and effective heartburn reliever.

"We may not sell a lot of Rolaids in Boston this weekend, but we're happy to give some away."

I found this quite funny.

Thats pretty funny. Its nice to see a company doing something good for its customers though. Its seems they won't be raising the prices or anything like that but actually giving free samples away and sponsoring the parade for us(well at least Boston area) to watch it commercial free. I wish more companies were like this, but sadly the vasy majority are not since they are just greedy.
