DarthEvilDude

yeah.

Sony has no experience. Just look at all early competitors with Nintendo.

they all tried making something more advanced than what nintendo had, but they were flawed and had shitty battery life.

Game Gear for example. The games had tons of colors, but it required 6 AA batteries, which would burn through it.

Sony's trying to put high-end stuff into its next run of consoles, and the PSP. i seriously think they've gone too far, and that this may be their downfall. Seriously, does a console really need that cell chip? next gen consoles are going to be probably as good as today's high end ones, so you dont need fancy custom hardware.

PSP is way too ahead of its time. i'm sure it would be a whole lot better if the battery last more than 90-500 minutes. I'm sure most people are going not bother living by the wall outlet and using the hardare for a nice game of solitare.

and those will cost...

that's what i thought. it'll probably be a bitch to take em out too.

here's a little something i found on IGN.

12:54AM: Turned System On
Following full recharge

12:54AM: Status Report
- Battery remaining: 100%
- Full brightness time remaining: 5:49
- Low brightness time remaining: 7:35

12:54AM: Played Games
Ridge Racers, Vampire Chronicles, etc., using system speaker set to full blast and screen alternating between minimum and maximum settings (videos look better when the screen is set to minimum)

1:54AM: Stopped playing games

1:54AM: Status Report
- Battery remaining: 89%
- Full brightness time remaining: 4:52
- Low brightness time remaining: 6:21

1:54AM: Turned System Off

3:30AM: Turned System On

3:30AM: USB and MP3
Transferred about 200 Megabytes of MP3 files to the PSP and used it as an MP3 player as I went to pick up another PSP unit. Had remote control and headphones attached to system. Listened to such artists as Prodigy, Utada Hikaru, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana, skipping tracks frequently as I determined that the PSP remote control and headphones suck.

4:30AM: Stopped MP3 use

4:30AM: Status Report
- Battery remaining: 76%
- Full brightness time remaining: 3:43
- Low brightness time remaining: 4:42

4:30AM: Turned System On

6:00AM: Turned System Off

6:00AM: Played Games
Played Minna no Golf and Armored Core at full brightness.

7:00AM: Stopped Playing Games
Noticed that remaining battery marker had fallen to two marks for the first time, so I wanted to check what the remaining battery was.

7:00AM: Status Report
- Battery now at two marks
- Battery remaining: 58%
- Full brightness time remaining: 2:35
- Low brightness time remaining: 3:05

7:00AM: Played Games
Continued playing Minna no Golf and Armored Core (low brightness for making videos)

7:45AM: Stopped playing games
Realized that you don't actually control mechs in Armored Core, so decided to stop playing.

7:45AM: Status report
- Battery remaining: 45%
- Full brightness time remaining: 1:39
- Low brightness time remaining: 2:07

7:45AM: Turned System On.

9:15AM: Turned System Off

9:15AM: Played Games
Played Armored Core just to make sure that you really don't control the mechs (low brightness for making videos)

9:30AM: Stopped playing games
Realized, once again, that you don't actually control the mechs in Armored Core.

9:30AM: Status report
- Battery remaining: 38%
- Full brightness time remaining: 1:43
- Low brightness time remaining: 2:19
(hmm... the battery time went up after we played Armored Core more. Maybe playing games where you don't have direct control over in-game characters results in energy being given back to the battery).

9:30AM: Turned System Off.

6:00PM: Turned System On.

6:00PM: Status report
- Battery remaining: 34%
- Full brightness time remaining: 1:35
- Low brightness time remaining: 1:58

6:00PM: Played Games
Played Lumines at high brightness (really bright outside) in order to try and "get" game.

6:30PM: Stopped Playing Games
Noticed that remaining battery marker had fallen to one mark for the first time, so I wanted to check what the remaining battery was.

6:30PM: Status Report
- Battery now at one mark
- Battery remaining: 25%
- Full brightness time remaining: 1:02
- Low brightness time remaining: 1:24

6:30PM: Played Games
Completed addicted to Lumines, so wanted to continue playing (this time, I accidentally played at low brightness without realizing it).

7:10PM: Status Report
- Battery remaining: 14%
- Full brightness time remaining: 0:30
- Low brightness time remaining: 0:40

7:10PM: Played Games
Lumines is toooooooo much fun (this time, I made sure to play at high brightness).

7:20PM: Stopped Playing Games
Noticed that remaining battery marker had fallen to zero mark for the first time and power meter had started flashing, so I wanted to check what the remaining battery was.

7:20PM: Status Report
- Battery now at zero mark
- Power meter now flashing
- Battery remaining: 10%
- Full brightness time remaining: 0:23
- Low brightness time remaining: 0:31

7:20PM: Played Games
Lumines is still toooooooo much fun (again, at high brightness).

7:45PM: Battery died
And I was right in the middle of a huge score in the Industrial skin on Lumines! It's okay, though, because the PSP goes into sleep mode when the battery dies, allowing you to continue play exactly where you left off, once you've gotten more power to your system.

7:45PM: Began recharge

Keep these in your other pockets.

If I wanted to carry spare batteries around, I would've done it for my GBA, since I never had any rechargable AA's.

And that time is awefully spread out. I would prefer them do a consecutive play kind of showing for the battery.

Doesnt the SP have one?

I'm aware how to use a rechargable battery.

And I wouldn't know about the SP, because I never had one.

DarthEvilDude
12-14-2004, 09:56 PM
yeah, the GBA SP has one, and it lasts 10 hours if you use the backlight, no matter what.

and its 18 hours when you dont use it.

PSP has a rechargable battery, but sony knows its not gonna last long, so they are making secondary ones, for after a good 90 minutes.

Wow Darth you might want to remove that hand out of your ass. Pulling your post from there must be getting a wee bit painful.

The PSP battery life will last anywhere from a 2 to 3 hours running a HIGH END

HIGH END

HIGH END

HIGH END

Game like Gran Turismo. Other games have already gone down ( Metal Gear Acid for one ) as being able to run for at least 9 hours. That's a bad thing for a game that looks that good?

Oh you'll have to forgive me if i'd rather play a smooth looking game for 9 hours rather than sub-par 64 graphics for 15. Besides where the hell would you be playing the PSP for three hours straight where an outlet wasn't available? Come on people think for a minute.

i can think of a few places.

a cross country flight.

a really bad case of the shits.

when the power is out.

and also, who takes ac-adaptors with them? just like who is going to spend more money on another battery when Sony could've just made it last longer.

and i'd gladly play Super Mario Brothers than play what you call a 'high end' game.

High-End games these days only come on one place. the pc.

Most cross country planes have electrical outlets. Besides I doubt you'd want to be playing a racing game that long anyway. I'd switch games to say Darkstalkers or Ac!d

a really bad case of the shits.

You shit in an outhouse? My bathroom has two electrical outlets and i've never heard of a three hour shit. I don't care how bad you have to go.

when the power is out.

If the power went out you'd better hope it was just after three hours but before 15 because then WHOMG your precious DS would go out too.

and also, who takes ac-adaptors with them? just like who is going to spend more money on another battery when Sony could've just made it last longer.

Sony couldn't make it longer given the tech they're working with.

I like how so many people bitch about the lack of innovation in the market then someone takes a step foward and everyone instantly nay says them and hops on the "done before" band wagon.

and i'd gladly play Super Mario Brothers than play what you call a 'high end' game.

Congradulations. You have a difference of opinion. I hear everyone has one of these.

High-End games these days only come on one place. the pc.

Wow.......

who said i was hyped up on the DS.

i'm not getting either one. i'm just saying MY OPINION that the PSP is not as good as the DS. Dosent mean you'll find me sucking Nintento's balls any time soon.

and look, bells and whistles are nice, but there's something more important.

Performance. you simply cant have huge bells and whistles without sacrificing performance on a handheld. That's why nintendo stuck to 2D for a long time, when they could get it right.

does that say i like nintendo? no. i own an SP, and the main reason i bought it was for a little something to do to kill time. 99 bucks isnt that bad for that use.

Nintendo and Sony are trying to make handhelds deeper, by making them equal to today's consoles, but really, you play basic games on the road, just so you have something to do, and play the deeper games at home.

and Capt. N, how long until your ban from G4 ends?

Captain N
12-14-2004, 11:03 PM
That's you. I'd love to play alot of the games the PSP has to offer on the road, and no is saying you can't play the PSP at home.

EDIT: o, and one more thing.. it may have better graphics, it may even have better games. but there are 3 things that really matter on a handheld that you cant deny:
1.battery life
2.size/portability
3.weight(i know that kinda falls into the above..)
This is why the gamegear failed, despite its great games and better hardware. it to would play for 90-180 minutes on its batterys, people would just not put up with this. if this is how it is, i see the PSP failing.

nintendo may have slightly worse graphics, but they designed a better overall system, and a more eficient one.

Wait wait wait wait...

...Realize I'm not even talking about the PSP here, but...

Where can I find airplanes with true electrical outlets on them!?

I do a LOT of cross country flights (I'm a business traveller) as well as some overseas, and I've NEVER seen any true electrical outlets on airplanes. I've seen plugs that you can buy specialty plugs to power specific devices on some overseas, but never on domestic flights, and I would LOVE to be able to run my laptop on a long flight! (The battery only lasts for a short time since it's an old laptop, and I'm too cheap to replace it.)

I'm serious...Please tell me where these flights are that use TRUE electrical outlets that I can directly plug my laptop into with the supplied plug, I'd use them all the time.

Well, I doubt Metal Gear Acid will last 9 hours.... but I won't be playing that anyways. I have a DS now, and despite the shit battery life I plane to also buy a PSP this summer, but if youa sk me, PSP's graphical power doesn't make it the best, I still think DS is the better of the two FROM WHAT I'VE HEARD, seeing as I haven't played a PSP.

Exactly, going from one point to double just doesn't sound right. If they said 1.5-2.5 hours or 2-3 or whatever, I'd see it making more sense...but those numbers bother me. I want a better idea...otherwise if I'd play a game, I'd have no idea if my battery were to die on me because it all seems so random.

Doesn't help me when I'm going from Georgia to California. I refuse to sit on a train for two days when I can just take a four hour flight. :>
