As the subject title suggests this thread is an attempt to start a debate over the two heavyweights of soccer sims. FIFA has long been regarded as the poorer of the two sighting lack of realisum in it's handling of the ball but can FIFA 2005 step up to the mark with its support for XBox live and attempts at answering it's critics by pushing away the 'arcadey' feel the franchise has always had?

Views and opinions to be posted here!

I haven't played much Winning Eleven but having picked up FIFA 2004 I admit it has gone a long way towards being a decent soccer game. No more pinballing back and forth through lob passes like in the past. Now you can actually move the ball on the ground! I think those silly Canadians that EA hires to do the games are finally learning what the game is all about..

From what I saw of Winning Eleven it definitely seems more indepth and difficult, but at the same time I really like the detail of the accurate uniforms and stadiums that FIFA has versus the generic stuff Konami has resorted to since they didn't license everything.

Since when has FIFA been arcadey? From what I have read everyone has always said FIFA is basically the nearly perfect soccer game. I have alwways though it to be the best one. I have the 99 version for my N64 and that one is great, I can just imagine how good these next genones are. I have Konami's one, which I think is the ESPN version, for 2002 or something like that and it totally sucks. The ball handeling is a pain in the ass and the controls just downright suck. FIFA all the way if you ask me.

Arandar, FIFA went all the down the crapper after 99, when they started fucking with the gameplay too much and it turned into an airfest with constant heading and skying of the ball. They only recently returned to making it a, oh I don't know, an actual soccer sim, IMO. I don't know what you're talking about as far as an ESPN soccer game goes though. :?

MLS Extreme 2002, made by Konami I think its ESPN's soccer sim or something because it does say ESPN right on the box. Thats one is horrible compared to FIFA.

I haven't played any of the FIFA games after 99 though so in what years version do they get back to the 99 type style? Like basically I want to get a next gen soccer game and I have always liked FIFA the most. So would it be 2005 that is the most like 99 and that I should get? Heh I just wish they would make a Mario Soccer, that would rule hard! I'm really suprised they haven't yet considering the popularity of both. I would think a soccer game before tennis or golf, but oh well maybe someday.

According to most FIFA is runs second fiddle to Pro Evolution Soccer series aka Winning Eleven. This is due in the most part to the ball control and the resulting improved realisum of the gameplay.

I never played Winning Eleven, but I always though the ball control in FIFA was fine. I mean true I have only played the 98 version and own the 99 version, but it seems good enough to me. If it was a choice between FIFA ball control and the MLS Extreme 2002 ball control, then I will take FIFA any day of the week. The only thing I get annoyed about in FIFA is that at least in the 99 version the higer level are hard as hell. There amatuer, professional, and then world class I think its called. That level is just about impossible to even score on, let alone actually win. The AI is like perfect, and I swear they can go faster then you can which seems cheap.
