The best RPG of all time? Pretty damn close.

This game just keeps sucking me back in. Over the past few months I have been bored with all of the games I have been playing. KOTORII, POP:WW, Paper Mario, ZzZzZz they did nothing for me. I pop in SOA and I'm hooked once again.

This RPG is the most fun I have had with an RPG ever. Infact I'd call it the greatest RPG of all time. That is if the story was a bit better, and some of the flaws where fixed.

Having played both the Dreamcast and Gamecube version all the improvments the GC version brings to the table really improve apon an already amazing game. Flaws such as the lengh and number of random battles bring it down a bit, but they arn't all that bad.

Discuss what is one of the greatest RPGS of all time, and how much you loved it/why you have yet to play it.

I wouldn't say it's the best RPG but the most fun I've ever had with a console RPG.
One of the only games that right after I finished it I started again(and finished again).

Haven't played the GCN version yet though. Didn't wanna pay full price so I waited and now I can't find it.

Amazon has it for $20.

Final Fantasy 7 is my favourite game. I played it 2 years ago so I thought the graphics was crap cos its quite old, but the story more than makes up for it. It is so immersive and the characters were all brilliantly done. The plot was excellent, so was the ending and final boss. There were cool mini-games, rocking music and hidden stuff.

A wicked game...

I wanna get Paper Mario now, damn I have to pay like the equivalent of $80 for it in South Africa. Damn Americans, you get everything 4 nothing ;)

Yo Sankon-Tessou

I would like to get both, but don't have the cash. Since you've played both, which would you say is better?

Tales of Symphonia is better in my opinion.

1. ToS is 80 hours and 2 discs......paper mario is 40 hours 1 disc.
2. ToS has real time combat, great special moves and amazing combos.....paper mario is turnbased.
3. ToS has an intruiging story with shocking plot twists....paper mario's story is good....but its more comedy based.
4. ToS has multiple endings, and I prefered the art style *I love anime*
5. Im a big mario fan...since the donkey kong arcade days.....but I have to give ToS the nod. I fell in love with the ToS characters and ended up hating one in paticular for his betrayal......

To Each is own...don't get me wrong Paper Mario The THousand Year Door is an excellent game....one of the top 5 RpGs I've played in the past 4 years. However I prefered ToS.

Thank You everyone who turned my thread about the great Skies of Arcadia into a thread about Paper Mario and ToS.

@ gk128

How can you be pissed off about that when you asked us what the best RPGs we have played are, and I haven't played Skies of Arcadia? Thanks for your sarcastic remark, it was really a meaningful and insightful addition to this thread.

@ Sankon Tessou

Thanks 4 the suggestion about getting ToS, I am looking forward to get it when I visit America in June, cos its just too expensive here, so I can wait.

A'hem

Skies of Arcardia is a great game. It's the only RPG I've played through 3 whole times. I was hoping that the new character added to the Gamecube version(can't remember her name) would join my party. They kinda made it seem like she would be playable. Great story, great characters, too many random battles, where's the sequal?

I should try Skies. Whats the battle system like in this one?

Your right about the random battles, but it all works out great in the end. I was so strong I easily kicked the asses of Ramirez's three forms.

A normal turn-based system is employed. However there is a twist. You get these "SP" points that you have to use in order to cast magic or special moves. What makes this work so well is that you earn more SP before each new trun. If you can hold off on using and SP attacks or magic against a boss, and max your SP out you can use the games ultimate attack "Prophecy".

There are also ship battles that are great and unique to the game. They are also turnbased, and use SP, but sadly there is no bonus for maxing your SP out in a ship battle.

I really love how this thread keeps comparing ToS and Skies over and over again even though the thread is clearly about Skies.

I think I'll start a ToS thread just to rant about Skies. It will only even the odds.

OK I have Skies for the Dreamcast, just haven't started it yet. Should I bag it & go get the GameCube version? Or are they comparable enough that I'm not missing that much?

You are missing bounties, and some back story. As well as some more items, weapons, discoveries, and crew members you can have join you. The battle system is slightly tweeked and there are less random battles.

Other than that it's the same game.

OK So I'm going to have to get the Gamecube version. I ended up getting pretty deep into the Dreamcast version. The game flow is pretty good, I don't even know how many hours I played it yesterday, but it was a good chunk of the day.
