View Full Version : what i watch and what i don't
I'll start off by saying I watch way too much reality TV, but really only because I want to produce one, so i'm soaking up as much as I can. I think Survivor is great but even the all-star version lost me half way through.
I liked Big Brother but now find it extremely annoying, yet compelling only in a hamsters in a cage kinda way.
Real World and Road Rules I like because they get young good looking, people together and get them drunk so they can reveal the worst of themselves on TV only to "grow from the experience" later. It's amazingly trite drama most of the time but for some reason I'm completely addicted and watch every season of each. It's like having an addiction to reseese peanut butter cups.
I enjoyed the Apprentice and found it to be a good way to do a show like survivor in the city, with brains and creativity rewarded over strength and stamina. Good job on that one.
I hate the Casino, I was excited for it at first. Mark Burnett putting his talents towards vegas would seem to be cool. It's not. It's scripted, it's phoney, and I don't find the two owners all that appealing.
The owner I did find appealing was Rocco DiSpirito over at The Restaurant. He was appealing in a pathetic OMG kind of way. An ego driven scardey cat, that refused to communicate with the money man in his operation. The money man had what, 22 restaurants? Rocco, wake up man. I was also a bartender for years and worked in some cool restaurants and know what kind of drama can go on, and I want to open a restaurant, so it was good to see that moneyman and his cheesy pack of experts in action.
The Bachelor, forget it, women are truly falling into the trap of fame and love so they can be dumped on TV. It's quite sad actually.
For love or money i don't watch but i like it. Let's face it, most women want to get a man for financial security so seeing them scoff to it on national TV is like watching a fisherman shoot fish in a barrell.
I don't like the Amazing Race anymore since like the first season. Two many people, too many places, let me off the plane.
The Surreal Life, sorry watching B celebs just doesn't hold my attention, unless they were given weapons and told last one standing gets a TV show.
The Simple Life i like, it's Paris Hilton and that annoying but funny Nicole Ritchie chick. They are funny in a hot dumb chick kind of way.
Didn't catch all of Joe Schmo 1 and haven't watched on episode of 2. *shrug*
and The last comic standing is usually entirely unfunny, so i don't watch it.
Ok that's enough for now.

I actually watch For Love or Money. The guy showed his true intentions when he axed every girl with a check for 1 mil.
I hate Paris Hilton. Nicole isn't all that bad.
I have seen some Newlyweds but really only because of Jessica Simpson. She is a trip, and while I'm not usually into blondes, she's in my top 5 right now.

I bet if you send her to Europe to talk to the locals about Football, it would be a riot. I'm sort of into blondes, but mostly darker blondes(like dirty blonde).

What about that Action Star thing? Are we really going to go see a movie with someone that made it through that series? Oh wait, people DO buy the CDs of those American Idols, don't they? Myself, I'd rather listen to William Hung's rendition of The Beatles Greatest Hits than whoever won the last few AI. As a writer, RTV is like biting into a broken glass sandwich, but I know it's here to stay. For now.
I have only seen 1 full episode of American Idol also, I don't enjoy all that singing.

I would catch the last minute or two of American Idol while tuning in for 24 and what I couldn't stand was that idiot saying: "Seacrest OUT!" every damn time! I wanted to reach through the TV screen and smack that guy!

I love Survivor, Amazing Race and American Idol. I do watch Newlyweds because of Jessica. But stupid Nick always has to show up and kill my buzz.

I love that show.

Ron Jeremy hitting on Tammy Faye, how can you not love that Scot? Surreal Life is hilarious! I agree with on the Simple Life: Dumb, hot chicks amounts to good television. :)

I've never really liked the Real World, and Road Rules seems to have been going downhill since like season 7 or 8. I barely like any reality shows other than The Mole, Amazing Race, and Last Comic Standing. I would say my favorite though is the Real World vs. Road Rules things , where they face each other in crazy challenges.

Now THAT show I hate.

Pretty much everything Scot just said is how I stand on reality shows... I like all the ones he mentioned except The Casino... and I do like the Surreal Life -- for some reason B/C Celebs intrigue me and i also like the Amazing Race...
Survivor and Apprentice are still my favorites... and I've been known to not go anywhere when these shows are gonna be on (damn do i need a tivo or what!?)
Oh and Joe Schmoe 1 was one of the funniest shows ever... i'm not watching the 2nd one because there's no way it can be as good...

That's the only "reality show" outside of the news that I watch. I thought Rocco was too busy being a "celebrity" than a owner. funny enough, watching that show makes me want to open one too, it actually one of two busness I'm thinking of opening.. Funny because I hated working in restaurants when I was a cook. But since I've been laid off and the hospitality industry is supposed to be growing, the idea's been bubbling around.
Reality tv in general just bores the living daylights outta me. I'd rather drink.

I agree that Rocco was too busy being a celebrity. I wonder if that's how he is by nature, or if he was like that because of the cameras. I believe he's owned two other restaurants in NYC before the filming of the first season. I have trouble believing Rocco didn't expect any of the stuff to happen or honestly didn't know better (like giving one eimployee a Vespa to stay on the job, while everyone else was getting fed up with the place).
I had liked the guy when he was doing Melting Pot on FoodTV, but totally lost respect for him after seeing The Restaurant. If none of that was scripted and/or planned for television, then he really is just an utterly incompetent owner.
That said, I ordinarily despise reality TV. I can't wait until broadcast TV sucks the genre dry and finds something else to leech off of. However, I find the reality shows that actually affect people's regular lives -- The Restaurant, Real World, etc. rather than the Ant Farms they popularly like to make.

you mean like they did with sitcoms? There are bad and good shows of every genres, i don't think "reality" is going anywhere, you'll just have to pick what's good and bad.

As I said, there are a few series that I have an appreciation for. I suppose I'm just a bit overly cynical about the phenomenon. Almost everything that comes out I find utterly terrible, even though I was addicted to the shows when they first started. There's just so little that's new. It took sitcoms a good 7-10 years before hitting that milestone.
I suppose if they bothered to actually make some decent shows and not shock us with "wife swapping" (http://abc.go.com/primetime/schedule/2004-05/wifeswap.html), I could concede my position.

I like the Restaurant too because it was such a car wreck. Rocco never owned a restaurant before but he was the executive chef of two big restaurants in NYC. I was really shocked that it seemed that he didn't know what he was doing. Usually, people like that are control freaks and what everything done their way. It just seemed like Rocco didn't care but rather only cared about launching his name. At the end of the show, I know they were suing each other for ownership of the restaurant. Anybody know how that ended up?

Looks like Rocco (http://www.roccodispirito.com/index.html) can't enter the restaurant, and a trial begins end of this month here's an article (http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=2781) about it
The funny thing is that he owns a restaurant called Union Pacific (http://www.unionpacificrestaurant.com/pages/home.html) and that's successful and he has trouble running this one? The recipes look tasty. I thought he was more interested in promoting his book and cookware. Eh, go figure. I will say this, his cookbook looked interesting when I looked at it in the bookstore, might get it sooner or later

Most of the reality shows on TV are lame. The only shows I like to watch are The Apprentice (very good show, a little tired of seeing close-ups of Donald Trump's so-called hair) and The Assistant (Andy Dick is a comic genius, IMO).
All the rest of the shows need to die a slow, painful death so I can start enjoying my fake, scripted shows again.
