This idea is fantastic, and I go to another forum which uses this.
It is apart of vBulletin, with Version 3.0.3 which we have.
Anyway, everytime you post you get points. These points can be used to purchase things at the store.
Such as, Glowing Username - which is your username glows in the color you choose.
Colored Username - Allows you to choose the color of your username.
Bold Username - This allows you to make your username bold in your posts.
Italicized Username - This allows you to make your username appear in italics in your posts.
Sticky Thread - Make one of your topics stick to the top of the forum!
Another thing is called Theif! which can steal points from other users. You can donate, setup a bank to deposit your money so it doesn't get stolen.
But liek the Theif! option can be limited to a one time use only for the time being. Since it would be sold out at the time.
And thats about it, I'm not making this up either.

I support this idea if it means we'll be able to change other people's custom titles/avatars.
Yeah we have that at UE.
I don't see it working here though. Just the way some people take things. I think points whoring/bitching would replace the reputation whoring/bitching.*shrug*

I like the idea except for the thief part. I have seen this before at other places, but I have never heard of the theif part where you can actually steal point from someone. That would probably piss people off since you know the same people would just be stealing from the same people all the time. Same with being able to change someone else's customer or avatar. But being able to change your own stuff is pretty cool. Although we would have to come up with more stuff to "buy" then just glowing names that are bolded or italicized(sp) considering anyone who has been here for more then a month would most likely already have enough posts equaling points to buy everything. I don't know if anyone would want to but we could do a buy a custom made avatar or sig or something like that.

If I had more confidence in the userbase here knowing that it's just the Internet and not worth having a hernia over, I'd be for this. It sounds really fun and cool.
However, there will be a whole lot of whining about it from people who take things too seriously, so it's probably best to leave this in the wishlist coluimn for a while. No sense upsetting people again.

I don't support it, kk.

Using rep points to buy things might be cool, but high post counts meaning you get rewarded I'd like to avoid. I don't think we have that many spammers here, even as a community I think our % of spammers is below the average (if there is such a thing).

No you misunderstood BamBam, this has nothing to do with your Reputation points.
Rather a new point system. So whenever you post you get points.

Yup, forgot that was a possibilty. But it can be done.

Yeah, I see it as an excuse to get spammers going.
Now if there was a different way to earn points, Like earning 50 points for every time you where given good rep. Then it'd be different.

I say points should be meted out at the mods' sole discretion.
Then it takes the fun out of the store idea.
And plus it is going to take a long time for mods to give points to all the members. We could be waiting for a long time.
I say no to that, and yes for the members to do it. But moderate spam.
Blackwolf
02-21-2005, 02:20 PM
But moderate spam.
The best way to moderate spam is by not giving a reason to spam in the first place. That's the #1 reason we eliminated the easy public viewing of post counts (even though you CAN see anyone's post count by looking at their User CP) - because it was a deterrent to spam.
If we start rewarding people with high post counts for ANY reason, then people will spam and make the place less hospitable to those of us who enjoy the actual intelligent conversations that are to be had here. You guys would have to wade through all the crap that people post just to "get points" to "use in a store".
As I said, if I had more confidence in the userbase here, I'd be all for it since it sounds really nifty. Unfortunately, certain users prove me wrong in certain cases every time. I'm a horrible judge of character, apparently.
Oh, and Duality was being his usual sarcastic self.

I understood, I just don't like the idea of post counts meaning something. The rep points means something to some and nothing to other. I was think like you could spent those points, but it would take off your rep squares, but maybe that would just be a mess?

Isn't our power dependent on our points? Whatever it is, it's still a benefit for high post counts.

You do gain one point of rep-giving power every 50 posts, yes. But if someone absolutely spams just to get that one point of rep power, then they get negative rep from everyone elsewhich negates it really well.
People with red bars give 0 points of rep power, no matter how many posts they have.

You see maybe I'm thiking differently.
Becuase under your username, it should have:
Points: 1202.64
You get a random amount of points when you post. About 30-50 points a post.

I have faith in the members here. I'm just curious on who you think might cause problems, you don't have to tell me though.

I will see what I can do. If it's something forum software related, Apulo's the one with the username/password to get into that stuff.
He gave me every admin power except vBulletin Customization and Add-ons. :/

THAT BASTARD! Heh. Basically though from what I can gether the only real useful things in the store though would be changing your name color and making it glow or whatever else. Unless there is already some type of premade store with alot more stuff? I don't like the whole changing someone else's sig, avatar, custom since that will just start fights.
Is it at all possible to make this thing like a somewhat reward for post count AND time here? Like not pure post count at all, but liek equally with time here. So like say its not given to someone whos been here for a month and spammed to hell with over a 1000 posts, but also wouldn't be given to someone whos been here for 6 months and only has a 100 posts. Is there any way at all to make an equal balance or is that not possible and just get back into the "rewarding for post count" mess?
Glow effect only works in IE anyway, screw that.

O, that add-on? Its not random, its depends on the LENTH of your post. so making a whole bunch of 1 or 2 word posts will only give you as many points as maybe 3 longish posts like this one, its actually intelligently thought out...
EDIT: if you have an account at vbulletin.com from buying the forums, this (http://www.vbulletin.org/hacks/index.php?s=&action=showhack&hackid=293) should link you to the add ons section right to that store thing, so you can look into it more :)

Apulo's having Internet issues and doesn't expect to be back online for another 2-3 weeks. (They cut the cable in his apartment complex when they were doing other renovations and are taking their time in rewiring the building.)

I think you might be underestimating just how difficult it is to alter the databases and code of the forum without screwing it up.
Dualist

It would be simple, in the way I would think Jelsoft would handle things.
AGN signs into Jelsoft, seeing as he is an admin, goes into a thing called "Edit Forum" and there should be an option to choose the Store.
He checks that off, and it would send it to another screen to pick what he wants to do with it.
Once he checks the things he wants, hits Submit, and boom its already built in without no hassle of shutting the forum down.
Trust me, another forum I go to has Arcade, Store, and a few others without the need for closing a forum. It is quite simple I'm guessing.

Unless you've admined a VBulletin forum (or any forum for that matter) and actually seen that's exactly how it works, don't assume it's simple.
Adding features like a store and arcade are far, far more difficult than just choosing an option from a drop-down menu, at least in my experience with Invision. Ask Lauren for more details since she's the one that actually did the board mods.

You guess incorrectly.
You left out the whole part of installing, configuring, setting up the database tables, and all that other fun stuff that goes on AFTER you download it from the website.
