...Because you never really forget how to do it.
I stayed up all night playing Sonic and Knuckles at a friend's house for the first time in over eight years, and I beat it in one sitting with no continues. Way back in the day before N64, I totally rocked all of the Sonic games, but I haven't played them since I was 12. Sure enough, when I popped in the legendary S&K cartridge, it all came back to me, and I went from Mushroom Hill zone to the Mecha Sonic boss in no time.
I still got it!
I hate to admit it but I feel like I lost my touch. I really suck when I play them now, but I eventually get my skills back after a few days.

I had that momentarily. First, I put in Sonic 1, and I died a few times before I got used to the Sega controllers. Within minutes, everything came back to me. I still remember the cheat codes, too!
I remember clearing emerald hill in 42 seconds flat.

That's sort of true, in a way. When I played NES for three days in a row once, my groin actually ached from constant sitting.

I never had a Genesis, I only had a SNES.
:(
My only problem with replaying a Sonic game after a while is that some booby traps are a lot easier to remember than others, so I usually dodge all the biggest perils but then trip up on some relatively easier thing to avoid, just because I didn't remember it as well. But once I get in the groove I hardly ever die.

Although not Sega related (yes, I do have a Genesis and a Sega CD) I recently popped in Starfox 64 for the first time in 5 or so years and got through it on one man.
I'm not sure if that's indicitive of the game's difficulty being ridiculously easy or me actually remembering it as if I was riding a bike.
My Genesis's cartridge port doesn't seem to want to work much anymore, hence why it's one of the two consoles I have that isn't hooked up to the TV. (The Intellivision being the other one due to it overheating after 5 minutes of use.)
