Is it just me or does every school get a consistent line of books dealing with the struggles of African Americans and their rise to freedom?
Frederick Douglass, Native Son, Huckleberry Finn, etc.
Look, I learned all of this in History, why the hell do they feel the need to press it on me in English? I read for enjoyment, not to make myself feel like shit about what my ancestors did.
Look, what am I supposed to say? Am I supposed to go up to a black kid in my English class, put my hand on his shoulder, and say, "I'm so sorry."
I'd much rather be reading some Edgar Allen Poe than the same old shit over and over.
