Sox'll be alright. Ran into an ace in Halladay today, and had a couple of managerial mistakes, but shit happens. Manny's starting to hit, and the offense is picking up in general. Starters have all been great their last outings, and Schilling's basically still in spring training. Wade Miller had his second rehab start yesterday. When he comes up, that'll give the team 6 legitimate major league starters. I think Wade will start out in the pen. That's the problem now. Francona is relying on Embree and Timlin too much. He's making the same mistake Torre did last year. Foulke's been spotty, too, but there's no reason for any great concern. Wade or Arroyo would go a long ways at shoring up the pen.

Of course, this a ridiculously small sample size to judge any team by. I don't put much stock into a fast or slow start.

That said, I say they'll win the East. :wink2:

The Phillies are 7-7. They were shallacked last night but the Mets 16-4. It was an ugly game. Aside from that, their pitching is looking decent and Burrell has been a monster at the plate. It's still too early to tell but I think they can at least contend for a wild card spot.

I think Boston pitching is in need of some shaking up. Schill and wells out. Arroyo needs to step up. Renteria better start hitting more and stop those double plays. Manny, Ortiz, Damon are all gonna have big years. Millar is still looking for his first homer.

That was some game buy A-Rod the other night. 10 rbi's and a solo homer short of the Home Run cycle. He had another tonight in a losing effort though.
I love baseball.

It hurts to have both Wells and Schilling out, especially with Miller still a bit away from returning. You're going to have starts from guys like Halama and DiNardo, maybe even Jeremi Gonzalez. Not exactly ideal. The offense is going to have to carry us.

Yeah he finally quit chasing the damn ball. That's what his problem was. It was good to see that he was smart with his swing. Tonite though, Mussina just didn't have any speed against the Angels and they took advantage of it.

Some more wacky Rays stats..

[Alex Gonzalez's game winning HR in the 9th last night against KC] was Tampa Bay's major league-leading 10th home run from the ninth spot in the order. Cleveland is next with six. What makes the trend even more remarkable: The Rays have yet to get a home run from the fourth spot in the order.

Overall, Tampa Bay's ninth hitters are hitting .383 (49-for- 128), best average of any spot in any lineup in the majors. Baltimore's leadoff spot is next at .378.

Tejada's making $10.7 mil this year, but he's obviously underpaid. Rollins' deal comes in the wake of deals like $8 mil for Orlando Cabrera, $10 mil for Renteria. It's overpaying, but it's not unthinkable. He was the best SS in the NL last year, 5th best in the Majors.

Sure, 2004 performance is what you should expect from Renteria, considering it just about reflects his career numbers. It's hardly worth $10 mil. Like I said, 11 SS were better. He put up 17 Win Shares, which just happens to be 1 less than you would expect from an average player. I don't know how "vital" that is to a team.

There's no way the cap is dropping. Wright's not a rookie. Right now, Duke's been RoY. But he might be ignored because he'll be lucky to pitch 15 games. After him, it's a toss-up between Tejeda and Francouer. Speaking of a bizarre ending, that was the most hilarious inning of baseball ever.

2-1 Marlins going into the 9th inning, Willis still on the mound. Rollins extends his hit streak to 23-games (sweet), Jason Michaels then walks. Hilarity ensues.

Abreu safe at first on 2nd baseman Castillo´s fielding error, Rollins scored, Michaels to third.
Todd Jones relieved Dontrelle Willis.
Endy Chavez ran for Bobby Abreu.
Burrell singled to center, Michaels scored, Chavez to second.
Utley reached on bunt single to pitcher, Chavez scored, Burrell to third, Utley to second on pitcher Jones´ throwing error.
Bell singled to center, Burrell scored, Utley to third.
Lieberthal singled to center, Utley scored, Bell to second.
Ryan Howard hit for Ramon E. Martinez.
Howard safe at first on 1st baseman Conine´s fielding error, Bell scored, Lieberthal to second.
Michael Tucker hit for Ugueth Urbina.Ron Villone relieved Todd Jones.
Tucker singled to right, Lieberthal to third, Howard to second.
Rollins singled to center, Lieberthal and Howard scored, Tucker to second.
Michaels struck out looking.
Chavez singled to center, Tucker scored, Rollins to third on center fielder Pierre´s throwing error.
Randy Messenger relieved Ron Villone.
Shane Victorino hit for Pat Burrell.
Victorino hit sacrifice fly to center, Rollins scored.
Utley grounded out to pitcher.

All in all, four errors, ten runs, and Dontrelle takes the loss.

Our bullpen is starting to fall off. Ugie was very shaky last night, and Madson has sucked for the past few weeks. Thank God we're getting some good help, with the Cards and the Cubs each having series against the Astros.

What is it they use the record for the season against another team for then? I swear I remember that being used for something. If its not for baseball then I would have said football, but you only play another team once or twice if your in the same division. And even then you use the record against the rest of the division. Not that it really matters, but I'm positive I know that from somewhere.

All-Night John
09-28-2005, 02:51 AM
Oh, yeah. If two teams tie for a division lead, and are both guaranteed a playoff spot by the the division or Wild Card, the team with the best head-to-head record will be the division winner. But I doubt that scenario will happen this year. If they tie for the division, but both trail the Wild Card winner, then there will be a playoff. If the division leaders and Wild Card team are all tied, there will be a playoff for the division, and the loser will play the other team for the Wild Card. That'd be fun to watch.

I know. And I didn't find it funny. :|

Boston's main thing to do this offseason is try to retain their players.
Not really. It's getting pitching support and replacing the players who are leaving, namely in CF and 1B. They'll make Damon an offer, but if he wants too many years and too much money, adios. Bring back Dave Roberts. Millar's already gone, and no one cares. We need a real firstbaseman. They'll bring back Mueller if they want, but they could just as easily replace him with Youkilis. Timlin will be back if they want. Same with Graffanino.

jeez...18 innings...
What's with the game recaps: AP Story (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/recap?gid=251009118): "Burke was mobbed his teammates at the plate after only the sixth series-ending home run in history, and the first since Aaron Boone sent the Yankees over Boston in the 11th inning of Game 7 in the 2003 ALCS."
And ESPN's litte chart (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=251009118)
