View Full Version : Why doom 3 isn't as fun as you would think.

Now, doom 3 is an amazing game, but there are 2 things that make it a little.. not fun.

1.) THe levels. There are VERY linear, but so pretty, I don't care, but it would have been nice to see different stuff.

2.) You can only play about 2 hours at a time. Well acually now that I think about it, this is good.... it just shows HOW FUCKING INTENSE THE GAME IS!!!!

Ok so it ends up there is only 1 thing wrong with it. :)

I know, but still you can't hold what they said against me, because what I said is true, they even varified it ;) hehe

Well, this makes me slightly glad that my comp can't handle the game; but, dang, that and Halo 2 for the 'Box are still a LONG way away.

The graphics design in doom is amazing... the AI, however, had to be mostly scripted to pull off a lot of the 'scaryness' of the game. If they had made the game less linear... it would be less scary, and I'd rather have scary than a bunch of doors to get lost in...

i got the game on wednesday, and i absolutely love it. This is the best first person shooter i have played since Halo. I put up some sheets over my window so i can play in the dark any time of the day. If you got surround sound going, the game scares the crap out of you.

On wednesday night, i had to sleep with my lights on.

True That!

Also try to find everything in the game, that means getting all the weapons you can as soon as you can and all the PDAs (unfornatly for me I found all of them, yes the idsoftware PDA at the end too, on my first try of the game, but that still not going to keep me from playing this game over and over again trying different things.)

Since I don't usually play games that would be considered scary the first time I played it I started to go insane :P.

The graphics are 5 years ahead of it's time.

The gameplay is 10 years behind the time. Boooooooring. Gimmicky. Id has never been very good at gameplay and it shows here.

Of course, if Carmack shit in a box a lot of people would buy it and wax poetic about it and give it a 10. "Oooooh. That corn looks soooooo real."

Graphics 9/10
Gameplay 5/10

C'mon HL2! I hope that ones not a turd as well.

Doom 3 was made for people who played the original Doom (me.) The reason why it's so much like Doom is because Id wanted to remake Doom the way they wish it could have been fdone 10 years ago. I loved Doom and I'm right at home with the gameplay of Doom 3.

If you give Doom 3 a gameplay score of 5/10, in my opinion it's because you've been diluted by the Gimmicks of CURRENT games. For me, Doom 3 is a lot more fun than Halo. Yup.

Dude. I spent $2500 on a rig to play Doom. $800 alone for an extra 8 meg of RAM. I had much more fun playing the original. Doom3's gameplay is extremely limited. I've played just about every game since PONG. PONG had better gameplay.

What do you mean it's limited? I don't really get that. It's limited because you're in a Scientific facility on Mars...I don't think there's much you can do inside a base like that.

Everything is linear. Find this code. Talk to this person. bleh

Hell, you can't even hold the flashlight with a weapon in hand. That is limited. And, a gimmick to highten tension which fails miserably. Not to mention monsters spawning behind you.......the oldest, cheapest trick in the book.

I guess futuristic planetary bases can't afford overhead lighting. And, space marines can only use one hand at a time.

While I certainly enjoyed Doom 3, I disagree completely that it's gameplay style is even remotely similar to Doom/II.

Those games were about running and gunning, shooting down everything with agility and coordination.

Doom 3 is much more about treading slowly, waiting for enemies to pop out at you. I didn't come into contact with more than three enemies (not including the spiders) at all throughout the game. Any chance I had to run and gun, was when I played with God mod on. And even then, it was fairly slow going.

Though now that I've played through Doom 3, I'm sincerely hoping that, when the technology lends itself to the ability, id will make its next game a remake of Hell on Earth. I remember how much fun I had running through a mock-up city and suburb in Doom II.

I'm also really hoping someone remakes the classic map UAC_Dead (http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/134177.shtml) for Doom 3.

doom 3 is simillar though, with pda's to open doors, like the blue red and yellow keys in the other doom games.

An example of the gameplay being similar is the methods used to fight the enemies. If you want to take down an Imp in one shot you have to run up close, just like in the first one. It feels a lot like the original.

Doom 3 arrived in the post TODAY thanks to Gameplay being sneaky and releasing the game 1 day early! Yes Doom 3 is supposed to be released on Friday 13th here in the UK :)

I've played through the first hour or so and I have to say I was quite impressed with the graphics and lighting. Id have really worked hard at this game and it shows!

As I played through it I realised that Doom 3 is a true successor to it's 10 year old older brothers. Small corridors filled with zombies and denziens from hell itself.

With this game's arrival I've decided to create a new video tracing the development of FPS games from 3D Monster Maze on the ZX81 right through to Doom 3. Called 'Circle Strafe' from the often used manouvre on FPS games it should be done for this weekend.

More thoughts on the game as I play through it.

I haven't played Doom or Doom II, but I bought this game nonetheless, and I love it. I have never really played a FPS that made me scared. But this game is just flat out creepy. I mean i had to pause it and catch my breath when I opened a closet door, and a head attached to god knows what jumped out at me and shirlled. I was like "Oh Shit!". I love the gameplay. My one gripe about it would be that it is extrememly dark, and I would like to see some of the enemies up close, with the light on.

Jeez. Do your mommies need to change your diapers, too? :P

I admit, I was startled early on. Notably, the mirror in the first bathroom creeped me out in a good way.

But after that, it stopped being shockingomgsoscary and just sort of "Huh? Another monster conveniently hiding in a closet, waiting for me to open this door? Oh no."

It felt as though there weren't enough distinct enemies. Every few maps they'd introduce a new creature, and then tiredly reuse it until it was boring. Not to mention the instantly disappearing corpses (I know there are mods that fixed that, but the point is they shouldn't have disappeared like that).

Also, the gibs weren't really gibs and were just a couple chunks of flesh and a bloody skeleton. What happened to the gratuitous splash of goopy gibs?

It wouldn't be so bad if you could actually see in some of the parts. The game is so friggin dark.

The game is intense, the mirror was just weird, but some other parts are just fucked. The whispers and the visions :0 And of course this- http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/DeadMan2k4/doom3ceiling.gif

eswat
08-19-2004, 07:01 PM
A good multiplayer experience, in my opinion, is 50% the actual game, and 50% the people you play with. Although I'm sure team fortress source will be awesome to play (yup thats right I didn't say cs source :p), in my past experience a lot of the people from the Half-Life tend to ruin the online experience for me a great deal, and you just get a lot more well-behaved people in Doom 3, so I think the multiplayer is decent (although the lack of max players does bite).

Same here. Everyone I have played with so far is always playing it fairly, and giving complements to the victor (which is me in most cases :P).
Just wait until the official SDK comes out, and then we can have a lot of fun.

I was playing multiplayer the other day and I spotted an asshole. He was like running around with a rocket launcher blowing everyone away, braggin about his score and shit. I decided to pick up a rocket launcher and camp the rocket launcher spawn to wait for him. He ran in the room and looked confused when it wasnt laying there, and I was hidden int he darkness. He tried to run out of the room like he felt me and I fired a rocket directly onto his head. He called me a faggot. It was pretty funny. Then he kicked me out of the server. What a loser.

I must say it is pretty good thus far I wish it didn't break one of my cardinal sins of videogaming though and that is creatures that spawn behind your or respawn. That is normally a death blow in my book. Still could be, I'm not done yet.
